Baker Academic Pre-Pubs: Check them out!

In another thread I mentioned the fact that Baker Academic titles have static pricing regardless of their production status. I want everyone to be aware of their value. Most "academic" books sell for over $100 each in a seminary bookstore. These titles are offered at rates that are affordable to most..

Strangely, the titles in Pre-Pub from Baker Academic are not tagged by the publisher as other listings are. This makes it impossible to give you a search result for all "Baker Academic" titles. The only way to find them in the Pre-Pub offerings is scroll down the description page to the non-linked publisher information. I find many of the Baker Academic titles very interesting so I have tried to group them all together so you won't miss out. I am sorry I can't help you find any Baker Academic titles that may have already been published without wading through 10,000 books. Tongue Tied
(I only checked the single titles in the current Pre-Pub list. There may be a multi-volume set but i doubt it.)

I did a search using the search box at the top of a Logos page for "Baker Academic" and got 103 hits. I didn't go through everything in your list, but I found 3 of 3 in your list within my search results.

When I did that search it gave me any hit with the word "academic" in it. --whether or not i put it in quotes.

Other resources have an active link for the publisher on the product
description page that will bring up all similar products (i.e. "College
Press")

edit: OK George, I found my neuropathic fingers and retinopathy have
me at a disadvantage. I was not getting actual quotes around Baker
Academic. Once I got that detail right I got the desired results.

I don't regret making the list though. [C] It kept me busy for a while.

You can also do a search for publisher:"Baker Academic" which is approximately equivalent to clicking the link for Baker Academic under Publisher in the left sidebar if it shows up; but at present there isn't a way to guarantee that any particular publisher you're looking for will show up in that sidebar, even if you click More to expand. I say "approximately" because searching for publisher:"Baker Academic" finds 65 titles, but once I've done that I can click on "Baker Academic" under Publisher and it narrows the field down to 63. I wonder which 2 books have "Baker Academic" as their publisher but were not published by Baker Academic? [:P] (Probably an error in the database.)

I'd be more interested if they told me that Bakers Exegetical Commentary on the NT Volume 2 was out on pre-pub, because I know for sure I'd read their commentaries, but these books, they would be just for me to say to people "I have an academic collection on my L4 library..." and nothing more. Don't get me wrong, I'd probably read one or two, but that's about it.

I wonder if we'll ever see BECNT other volumes in Logos 4. Anyway, I'm not negative, I just wish we had the BECNT as a complete series.

Not all Logos users find all resources useful. I bought Barth's Church Dogmatics for nothing more than my personal interest. I could have just purchased Studies in Karl Barth Collection (2 vols.) instead. But the titles on "Worlview" and "Postmodernism" can be very useful if you cross paths with students at the university. Many people are diligently searching for answers. My roomate at Bible college did missionary work with Mormons. He studied their history & doctrine deeply to meet them where he found them. I do not see a need to study those subjects as deeply because my interaction with that group is rare. If I were a hospital chaplain I would need to focus my Logos library in different areas than a preaching elder might. Since I am neither I am currently focused on my archaeological & Near-Eastern interests.

One cool thing about Logos is their ability to meet the needs of such a diverse group of users.

I especially want to commend to everyone the Powell textbook because of its innovative approach.

Just as Logos is utilizing features of the Internet within its program (like on its maps), the Powell textbook is filled with "hyperlinks" to the book's accompanying website, IntroducingNT.com. The links provide more detailed information about topics on interest that could not fit into the pages of an introductory book. If you haven't checked out this site, it's filled with lots of useful information.

Dear Logos Powers-That-Be: I hope this outstanding feature will be incorporated into the electronic version of this book!!!

Does anyone know why the Baker Academic titles are taking so long to produce? There's some discussion at http://community.logos.com/forums/p/41676/310760.aspx, but I couldn't find a good answer.

They state that "will be pushed into development when there are enough orders to cover costs." Many have been "Under Development" for a long time, but there has been at least one (http://www.logos.com/product/6042/desiring-the-kingdom), which has only just become Under Development. My hope is that they were waiting until all of the titles were Under Development, before proceeding with any of them. If this is true, then as the last one has recently moved to Under Development, they can now push them into production and finally get these long delayed titles out the door. Does anyone know if this is true, or what the real reason is behind the hold-up?

It depends on your goal. If you just want to learn enough to speak out against a simplified (often straw man) version of a view, a simpler resource might do the trick. I can't speak for Transforming Worldviews but I know James K.A. Smith (author of Who's Afraid of Postmodernism?) has done a lot of work at integrated the better parts of postmodernism into Christianity, rather than outright rejecting it. An oversimplified summary won't have any of that constructive work in it, and won't allow you to interact with anyone who actually knows much about postmodern thinkers.

My minor is in apologetics. I would love to read both those resources. I am grateful Logos has resources for everyone. I could say, "Who in their right mind would read 'Catholic products," since I am not Catholic. But I am grateful Catholic products are available so I can learn about Catholics and there is another base of customers for Logos Bible Software.

Matt and Mitch or M&M LOL I, too, am thankful for different resources (e.g. Catholics, Mormons, Worldviews, etc.). So I hope you didn't take offense at my comment which, by the way, was posted back in March. When I saw them today, I thought for a moment someone hacked my account and posted, but I realized it was an old thread (3 months old) and had forgotten all about it. Anyway, let some old threads come out, because for some reason the forums seems to be kind of slow lately. I guess it's the summer trips and all. Oh well, have a great weekend!
