Logos for Linux: Let's put our money where our mouth is!

Hi all.

In another thread, Bob said that he would need half a million to a million dollars to produce a version of Logos for Linux. Shall we see how close to that we can actually get?

Let me start the ball rolling. I estimate that I'd pay for a Windows license each time I buy a new laptop - every few years on average. I'm also buying upgrades to VMware that I would hopefully not need if I could run Logos on Linux. The VMware workstation license is $US189, and I'm paying that about every 2 years. I'm not sure how much a M$ license is, let's say about the same. So let's guestimate that this works out to an average of $US150/year.

I'll pledge, then, to pay Logos $US150/year for the development and maintenance of a Linux version, for as long as they need to make it viable.

I'm confused (Not necessarily a new experience [*-)]). Why would you pay the full price every two years? The upgrade cost from the previous version is only half that. Unless you need to upgrade to a new version of VMWare, why would it cost you anything?

I'm only paying the upgrade price. I just didn't go hunting for it and thought it was closer to the full price than that. Anyway, I'll happily pay a bit more for Logos to get it on Linux

you will find a pledging system for getting Logos Bible Software
running under CrossOver. It's got 19 pledges at $1,793.90, and I'm
pretty sure that I represent at least $500 of that. Get the pledges
over $250,000 and we'll believe there's a viable market. And so will
Codeweavers. You'll probably get it fast. :-)

Wow, that is great. So adding the $650 in pledges here to the $1,800 in pledges from that site, now they only need to raise $997,550 more in pledges to get this project moving [;)]

As I see it, the benefit of making it run in codeweavers means that everything on the Windows version would work on Linux as well. That means only one code base being maintained and as far as I can tell - no additional strain on Logos tech support.

There are two approaches to making it work under codeweavers. One is to improve codeweavers, the other is to change Libronix to not to use special libraries. I did not donate to the codeweavers project to support libronix because I don't have a guarantee that a new version of Libronix will be written so that it won't break anything when running from codeweavers. If logos can make a commitment to support the platform of "codeweavers on linux", then I would donate to that project.

With one Windows license for one computer (e.g. Windows 7 Home Premium license agreement has "Use with Virtualization Technologies" - needs valid license assigned to computer), could use Oracle's free VirtualBox to create a Windows Virtual Machine on Linux - essentially dedicated to running Logos 4.

Configuration ideas: change Internet Explorer home page to www.logos.com, install OpenOffice (copy and paste with Logos 4), shared folder (transfer OpenOffice documents to/from Linux host). Configure VirtualBox networking so Windows Virtual Machine has private IP (optionally add Linux firewall rules to only permit network traffic to Microsoft and Logos). Periodically use Clam AntiVirus to check for bad stuff (optionally not install AntiVirus software on Windows - if dedicated for Logos, low risk for infection). Also could harden Windows by disabling unneeded services (e.g. USB, floppy drive, Microsoft Server Networking, ...).

Hardware consideration - need enough RAM for host linux operating system and virtual machine. On a computer with 4 GB, suspect 1.5 GB for Windows Virtual Machine would allow Logos 4 to perform respectably.

It's ironic that one of the biggest pulls of Linux is that it provides everything Windows does (and does some things much better) but is free - (yes there is something else that is free other than God's grace!!) and yet this thread asks if Linux users would pledge money!!

Well, despite the irony, I'm willing to match the $1800 (and potentially add more) in a one-off payment if 'LfL' (Logos for Linux) goes under serious development (which given the similarity between MacOS and Linux kernel should be a lot easier now).

I would prefer a native app rather than an emulated one and prefer my hard-earned money go to Logos and not codeweavers!!

Observation: VMWare Server is free - installs as an application on Linux (or Windows) - can create virtual machines (could dedicate one for Logos 4).

On a 64 bit host linux, anticipate 64 bit Windows would perform better than 32 bit Windows (avoids virtual memory address translation).

Thanks this will help get me started but I am going to have to ask a
lot of questions. I had Linux on an older machine but I tried to create
a Windows Virtual Machine with Logos 3 and failed miserably so I did
not install Linux on this newer machine. Hopefully your guidance will
lead me through the processes Some of these questions may be answered
once I install Linux but I will ask them now anyway.

Virtualization Technologies encompasses software capable of running Guest Operating System (OS) on Host OS. For Windows hosts, Microsoft offers Virtual PC. For Linux hosts, Oracle's VirtualBox and VMWare Server are free applications - both are capable of creating Virtual Machines that can run Windows (Guest OS).

Virtualization Technology spectrum also includes emulators (e.g. codeweavers) and Hypervisors: small Host OS that virtualizes hardware for Guest OS.

Windows has default home page for Internet Explorer - can be changed from default Microsoft portal. Also have option to install open source FireFox and change default browser.

VirtualBox and VMWare Server have Virtual Machine configuration options that includes networking (IP address, emulated adapter, ...).

Clam AV is open source. McAfee is a commercial alternative. Due to conflicts, unwise to install more than one Anti-Virus suite in WIndows. If create new Virtual Machine (not directly addressable from internet) and install fresh copy of Windows, should have Windows Virtual Machine without any malware.

Amount of RAM for a Virtual Machine is a configuration option.

When Logos completes it's move to a totally cloud based product, it won't matter nearly as much what OS you are running.
