Computer undated to 4.0a, downloaded some resource, asked to be restarted, and started to prepare and (what I thought was indexing). Went to bed, came back this morning, only to be asked to restart, because there were more resources to be installed.

Now indexing is at 3%.

How about letting the software automatically download, install, and reindex with out input from the user. If this were an option, indexing would be finished. It ustally takes 4 hours, to completely index my 2360 files.

Core 2 Duo, 4GB of Ram. HP G71 340 Notebook.

Do you mean updated to 4.2a?

I agree this would be better. The reason it works the way it does is that some resources are only compatible with 4.2a. Therefore, it's only when 4.2a is properly installed that it can then download the resources. It would be no good if the installation failed in some way, and then you were stuck with 4.2a resources but the 4.2 program.
