keylinking

Hi,

I set BDB and HAL as prioritized resources. But when I click on words like "nephesh" in BDB, the powerlookup activates, but I do not see any definitions. On some words, like yahveh, when I right click I get several options to chose from. When I right click on nephesh no dictionary resources are indicated. Nephesh is only one example of many words which do not activate any dictionary resources.

I looked at other posts, and the advise was to prioritize resources. I've already done that.2061.nephesh.mov

Please advise,

Mark A. Ellis

    I did some playing around.

If I double click on נפשׁ I get directed to CHALOT (don't have HALOT yet)

If I double click on נפש I get Power Lookup.

I think what is happening here is that there are forms in BDB that the search engine doesn't know what to do with since they don't match up to the way the lemma form shows up in HALOT so they run the text to Power-Lookup which is what Logos does when it can't perform a lookup for whatever reason.

You're not doing anything wrong, its just a limitation of Logos with the differences between different styles of writing Hebrew.

Mark, can I clarify? In the message you are saying you're clicking on "nephesh" in BDB, but in the video you sure yourself clicking on it in BHS. Kevin's answer applies to clicking in BDB.

But it seems to me that you're problem in BHS definitely shouldn't be happening. I've checked on my PC on BHS/WHM, BHS/WIVU and BHS/SESB, and it doesn't occur. Which BHS are you using? Can you paste the support info from the bottom of the (i) panel for your BHS resource, and perhaps one of us can check that resource for you.

    THank you for your attention.

The version in the search is Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia Morphologically Tagged Edition. I opened the BHS/WIVU and it worked.

Thank you for putting me onto this lead!

Thanks Mark (Barnes) for your comment. I don't have a quicktime plugin for my browser so I didn't watch the video.

A bit of history for the other Mark (and any other interested parties)

The older BHSes are a bit of a mess when it comes to executing a keylink. That's because with the variations between how dictionaries list lemmas, the transformations Hebrew words regularly take, and all of the homonyms in Hebrew make a spelling-based Keylink system undreliable.

The example in your video looked like the lemma tag did not begin with נ but ן or something else... the resolution wasn't clear. So, that spelling difference was something that threw the Keylink system to the Power-lookup.

The newer BHSes (Westminster 4.2/WIVU) have each lemma associated with the right entry in your lexicons. It's a manually constructed table so that you get where you need to go when you want to look up a word. So the moral of the story is that unless you have notes/highlighting attached to an old edition of the BHS you'll probably be best hiding it and going with the newer ones. I've hidden the Westminster 3.5 and 4.0 for that reason in my library.

Here's an interesting post on the Keylinking by a Vincent Setterholm http://community.logos.com/forums/p/23519/175313.aspx#175313
