What journal should I get?

I have been looking at the journals. I think they would be a great benefit to me. I am an Associate Minister at my church and I am the type that loves to break to Word down. I want to get some journals but I don't know which ones to get. What about the Theological Journal Library vol 1-10? I hear that is a good start. What about just vol 6-10? I am also getting Discipleship Journal. I know all about it because I use to have a subscription. Any thoughts would be appreciated?

What I suggest you do is to buy the most recent TJL disk, Theological Journal Library, vol. 13 . Explore what's there, and decide which journals you want.

From the Theological Journal Library, the ones I use most are the exegetical ones:

Journal of Evangelical Theological Society
Tyndale Bulletin
Review and Expositor

Others such as Faith & Mission and Emmaus Journal I use on occasion.

The main problem with many journals in the TJL is that the merely repeat a particular point of view ad nauseum, without ever stepping outside of their own way of thinking. Since they don't engage with alternatives, they have no chance of convincing or even addressing the questions of people of other persuasions, and so serve little purpose but to reinforce what those committed to that perspective already think. (Of course, that's a very broad criticism that is actually applicable to many books and papers.)

The Evangelical Review of Theology is also useful. (I think I got that from the WEA disk)

I bought Discipleship Journal on a special from a another mail-order place. Interesting reading and worth the price, but not the same theological depth as the others above.

You probably should be aware that many of these (such as JETS) are available for download as PDFs, but IMHO it's worth the price to have them searchable in Logos.

There are a couple of journals in pre-pub at present, such as:

JBL is pretty academic. Themelios is also available for free, so it's up to you as to whether it's worth it. (Personally, I'm signed up for JBL, but not Themelios.)

The Journal of Biblical Literature (published by the Society of Biblical Literature) has for years been one of the premier journals in the field. It is now on prepub so it is a good time to get it at a reduced price.
