newbie: eBooks & Logos

I'm not a user of Logos (yet) but I'm interested in moving (reaquiring) my book collection into a digital format. Many of the books I'd like to acquire are available through Logos - Piper, Sproul, MacArthur, Packer, Schaeffer, et. al. Is there a benefit to having them in the Logos format rather than purchasing them on a Kindle or Nook? Is it just easier to have them all in Logos in order to be able to search them?

My interest is bible study and apologetics. I am considering setting up Logos (Leaders Library) on my laptop, and eventually getting an iPad or HP Touchpad (with the Kindle app), maybe this summer...

There are other advantages to having your books in Logos as well as those you mention. In Logos you can take notes (even extensive notes) on any passage in any resource. You can easily refer to any passage referenced in another work which you have in your Logos collection such as grammars, lexicons or bibles. You sort of remember a particular passage referenced in some work, but you wish to refresh your memory? Click on the link and it will appear saying "At your service, Master" like a genie (Well, not quite). [:)] But you get the point. You half remember a quotation from some work, but aren't sure where to find it? Run a search on a word or phrase to find it. You want to know how many times the word ὁμολογέω appears in the NT and where? Run a search (26 times in 23 verses). The possibilities are legion.

Craig, Logos is way more than a simple eBook Reader. This is a state of the art research platform. Reading books is really the side dish! You will be so amazed at this product that you would like to use it every minute of the day. Logos has saved me hours and hours of work plus visit to my seminary library. I can write essays and research papers faster because of the fantastic capacity of searching, building collections, highlighting, etc...

You will see, when you learn more about it... I also have an Ipad and the Logos app is great as well.

Logos 4 + iPad would be my recommendation. Kindle is just for reading books. Like others have stated, you will be able to do so much more with L4 and iPad than just reading books. In fact, if there's a foot note or a scripture it will come up in a pop up window something so simple that I don't think kindle can do.

Now if they get done with the droid app then you could get yourself a droid tablet and Logos 4 and that will be so much better. The problem with the iPad or iPhone is that you have to purchase your apps whereas with droid you get so many apps for free. Droid is so much better from what I've seen so far.

Anyway, up to you what you want to get.

i agree completely. Logos is the reason that I bought an iPad, and I have not been disappointed. It is a great platform for reading Logos books, and there is no additional charge to have your Logos books on your computer and on your iPad. You can do serious study on the computer, and serious reading on the iPad. A blessings and the best investment I made in a long time. I bought a refurbished iPad from Apple, and it has been perfect. Saved $100.

The problem with the iPad or iPhone is that you have to purchase your apps whereas with droid you get so many apps for free.

I hate to dispute my brother's word, but t'aint so. The Logos app is free on the iPhone or iPad. You have most of your Logos books on the iPad free. And beyond Logos, there are more free apps on the iPad than on the Andriod. Are you telling me there are no apps for sale on the droid? There are thousands of free apps on the iPad. And the ones that I have decided to buy are cheap and marvelous.

For example, (I like for examples in my posts), I have a free app that lets me watch my home television DVR anywhere I get wifi or 3g on my iPhone / iPad. Was out of town doing a revival last week and it was wonderful. I have another free app that let's me play chess with my son on the iphone, and he lives 600 miles away. What a great way to keep in touch since you can chat while you play.

Oh no you didn't...lol...don't you dare get me started on an iPhone vs Droid debate.

Nah, it's ok, whatever he chooses to buy is fine with me. I like droid better. Yes, droid has some "for sale apps" but over all, I have so many apps that my friend (who owns an iPhone) had to pay for them. But then again, it's a choice. I just love droid because of the Drrrrrroid robotic voice commercial...hehe.

If you purchase a Logos 4 base package, you have the option to download most of your Logos library to an iPad for offline use. Some publishers do not allow their resources to be used on an iPad. Forum thread is discussing future of Logos application on iPad => http://community.logos.com/forums/t/29373.aspx - with Apple now enforcing in-app purchase option for digital content, not know if Logos application will be available in App Store after June 30. Do use Logos application on an iPad in church services; split screen is great. Easy to compare bible versions (or bible plus commentary); also appreciate NET Bible footnotes.

Looking at Logos comparison page http://www.logos.com/comparison - noticed several Logos 4 features need resources in a higher package. Personally like United Bible Society Handbooks that are included in Scholar's Gold package because they are easy to read while providing cross cultural insights (and sermon illustrations); would be glad to copy and paste a couple verses from UBS handbooks.

HP Touchpad runs WebOS. Currently not enough Logos users have WebOS devices to justify business expense to develop Logos application for WebOS. With internet connection, can use http://biblia.com to access Logos Library (essentially web based book reader).
