Can't use cite tag to link to The Message

The default translation on our site it NLT, and I have had no problem with tagging references in other translations until I came to tagging one using The Message. I just can't get it to work but it is listed in the translations in the 'Download Reftagger' section as well as in the control panel.

But this just gives me a 'This reference could not be loaded at this time' message. The link itself taked me to http://biblia.com/bible/nlt/MESSAGE%201John%201.9 - which won't load because it's including NLT first.

What am I doing wrong?

This is a known issue. If you use a cite tag, RefTagger won't try to parse the title as a reference; it just assumes that it is a reference. This is intentional as a way to override reftagger's matching system when you're using a format that's not supported by reftagger. The problem with this is that reftagger is assuming that the entire title, including "MESSAGE" is part of the reference, so it's trying to look up the reference "MESSAGE 1Jn 1:9" in your default version, the NLT, which is obviously wrong. Currently the only way to cite a different version is to put it in the surface text & not use the cite tag.

Thanks, but I don't think it's a simple as this, is it? The reftagger instructions about using markup imply that it follows Bibleref markup syntax. On the Bibleref site, it specifies that version can be included, which I did with NIV and it worked fine. Here's what I used in that instance:

<cite class="bibleref" title="NIV 1Peter 5:8" style="font-style: normal">1 Peter 5:8</cite>

I don't see why one should work and the other not.

Judging by the drop down option, it is "MSG" not "MESSAGE" ... or am I missing something?

No, it doesn't work. I tried that first having hunted around to try to confirm what abbreviation I should use.

Still no solution to this a year later? Today I need to reference The Message again, and I've looked again at the Bibleref specifications on semanticbible.com, where it states, "English bibleref processors MUST recognize the version designators specified in Appendix C of the OSIS specification."

So I've looked through the OSIS specification and found the designators in Appendix D (not C), where it lists TM as the approved abbreviation for The Message. So I included that in my <cite> tage, and it still doesn't work. It would be nice to have a solution for this, even though I only reference the Message once a year, it seems.
