Tablets
Hello:
The absolute ONLY reason why I am considering any kind of Tablet is to use L4. I don't need to watch movies, listen to music or play cute little games on apps. My goal is to be able to do everything I can do on my L4 today on my desktop ... only portable. I am looking to be able to take it to church with me and look up resources as the pastor talks about what he has spent the week studying. To be able to highlight and add notes would be critica for me so I would be looking for something with a touch screen and stylus perhaps. Highlighting, note taking and access to all of my resources as well as the Bible will be important.
My only question ... is there such an animal and is it powerful enough to run L4? Perhaps it doesn't yet exist and perhaps I need to wait for something on the horizon but am anxious to get my hands on something if it is available. I know I'm posting this on the iPad string but please advise if anything out there can do this ... iPad or not.

Hopefully church has location where easy to use computer during sermon (especially for lots of typing). Using an iPad to display 2 resources side-by-side in a pew works nicely (2 Bibles or 1 Bible and 1 Commentary). Thankful my Church has a web site with video capture of service; can replay later.
MacBook Air is light and easy to carry; can run Logos 4 Mac.
Recently read about a notebook with 2 touch screens now available to order => http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/04/07/acers_iconia_touchbook_takes_on_ipad_macbook_air_using_windows_7.html (also noted shorter battery life; wonder about using blue tooth keyboard with portable dual screens)
Logos 4 is resource intensive on Mac & PC – benefits from fast processor, graphics, and disk along with adequate memory (i.e. newer hardware since Logos 4 being designed for use over 5 to 8 years).
Aa a Logos user, currently not know future of Logos iOS application after June 30 due to Apple changing in-app purchasing rules for digital content. Thankful for Logos iOS application improvements; looking forward to Logos iOS Highlighting and Notes (no idea about feature availability).

I do not believe there is a tablet computer that will run the full blown L4.
I have the iPad and love it. It will let me read over 2,000 of my resources. It will let me do searches and has the passage guide, etc. It will copy and paste. But it does not have all my resources. (No NIV, for example.)
I would hate to give up my iPad. Many of my resources, such as the Tozer collection or the N. T. Wright books, I would never read on a computer. Reading them on the iPad is as good as a paper book for me - even better. So I consider the iPad one of the best bargains I ever bought, and I bought it solely for the Logos app.
But I could not do more serious Bible study without the full blown L4, which I use on my laptop. Lately, I have found it very helpful to use both my laptop and my iPad together.
Back to your question, no, I know of nothing in a tablet with the hardware to run the full L4. If you find something, please let us know what it is and how good it works. Surely, something is coming as fast as technology moves.

I have to respectfully correct this. There are plenty of tablet pcs that will run L4. HP has one. Lenovo has one. But it will not cost $500 like the iPad or even $800 like a Xoom. It will cost $900 to $2200 and will be heavy. However, it will run it. Fujitsu and Toshiba I think also make them too.
Another option is to get an iPad and run Logos mobile app. But for highlighting and note taking you will need to run another app until these are incorporated into Logos. We have been promised they would one day. But let's hope it is either very soon or the rapture comes. But it seems to be coming somewhere between next week and the 22nd century :-)

another option is a convertible ?netbook/tablet like my acer aspire 1825PTZ. I normally use it as a netbook, but can turn it round and use it as a tablet, e.g. on those silly little tables that come down from the back of the seat in front of you on buses and planes. It's light enough to be very portable, though not light enough to read in bed. To be honest, I don't like the keyboard, as Kevin warned me beforehand, the keys are small. And I find the on-screen touch keyboard difficult, partly because I haven't taken much time to learn to use it. Despite these irritations, I use it constantly. It has an excellent battery, which gives me about 5 hours running time. So I use it as a portable DVD player, listen to podcasts on it while doing housework, etc. I feel I made a good buy, despite minor irritations. And, of course, it runs complete L4. It cost me very little more than the iPad I got more or less at the same time, which I use as an e-reader, or super-portable simple Bible study machine.

I'm kind of like Nicky (I have a similar answer in another thread yesterday). Mine is just a plain-jane netbook with a touch screen. At church, the touch screen goes on my lap, so most fellow worshipers aren't bothered by it. Then in class where PC's are more acceptable, it sits on the table regular for Bible study. Works great, though L4 tends to run slow. I like the idea of iPad but I don't like the idea of a reduced feature set ... I often end up having to go home and repeat the exercise on the full-featured software.

How much ram does it take to run L4 effectively, and do these tablets have enough? And how heavy is too heavy for a tablet?

As others have stated already, you're not looking for an iPad type device you're looking for a full fledged computer, the two are not the same thing and were never meant to be. The closest thing in terms of size, weight and portability would be the Mac Air or one of the smaller Mac pro's. There are some windows PC's you can get cheaper but will compromise price for performance, especially in regard to battery life and reliability not to mention vulnerability to cyber attacks.

This is true for all other things except Logos 4. Right now the Windows version of Logos 4 is faster than the Mac version unless you have a slow PC and a fast fast Mac like my new MacBook Pro which still chugs along a little bit running this program.
If you can be patient about 6 months there will be more PCs with more ipad like size/form factor that will run Logos 4 adequately in terms of power/speed. Just not many now.

I have a PC desktop, PC Laptop, and old Macbook running "panther" - no use for L4, but Libronix is on it. I also have (and love) iPad 1. But had been very very seriously looking at new 13" 2.2mhz MacBookPro ... your insight please, as a "guru" ... of the better kind!

I, too, look forward to the promised android version. I have an ipad and enjoy using it. But I also have an android based phone and have found it to be solid as well. I haven't found one platform to be superior to the other for my own use with other study software (such as Olivetree). At Camp Logos last week I was told that the android version for Logos is in the works. Hopefully it will appear, soon.

L4 on a beefy pc tablet (>5k respurces) just runs too slowly to keep up during a sermon or fast-moving lecture where I am taking notes in OneNote but trying to copyverses from L4---REALLY wish OneNote, SmartTags, and L4 could get together.Starting L4 with no Internet is very slow, and layout changes are much too slow (although I do use complex layouts across 4 windows). The L4 pcinterface also isn't fully touch/pen aware and can be finicky at times--esp if not using a pen.
With that said, I'm sold on tableys w/l4 and take mine just about everywhere.

It is bearable, but frustrating when you are used to the performance of the PC. The fastest MacBook Pro doesn't run it as fast as a 4 year old PC.
Kevin, I have no real issues running L4M on a 3 year old MPB. I used L4W in a VM when L4M was first being developed (Alpha stages) But have switched to just using L4M and when I switched there was no real difference between them that I could notice. I am not a heavy original language resources user either so that could be some of what the difference. I mainly use L4M for the Bible Study Guides (Passage/Exegetical/Bible Word Study). I am learning more about the original languages and how to use them when studying the Bible (thanks to logos videos) but am no where near what a lot of logos use them for. For the Studying I do L4M works fine for me.[:D]
