Funny characters in my text - Ideas?
Hey everyone,
I've got these funny characters showing up in my resources. This one, in particular, is in the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (Eleventh Edition). I see them all over the place though... Any ideas?
I'm using 4.3 Beta 2 (4.30.0.0208) on Windows 7.

Have you changed the default font? Usually these issues are font issues.

I am running the same Beta. It works fine for me. Using calibri font.

Yes, I am using the Adobe Garamond Pro font. I thought I had seen someone else using this particular font as well.

Hmmm. I changed to Calibri and it corrected the issue in both resources. Does anyone know how to make Adobe Garamond Pro work properly?

properly?There's no way you can "make Adobe Garamond Pro work properly." It
appears Adobe Garamond Pro does not have a schwa character (the
upside-down e) so that would explain why it won't show up. It does have an i with a circumflex over it ( î ), though, so I wasn't sure why nĕtı̂nı̂m won't show up properly. I copied and pasted it into Word and also manually typed in a word that has an î in it. I checked what those characters are in the Insert Symbol
dialog box, and they are actually two different characters in Unicode.
The one I typed in myself is the correct "LATIN SMALL LETTER I WITH
CIRCUMFLEX" but the one copied in from Anchor Bible Dictionary is "LATIN
SMALL LETTER DOTLESS I" (why that displays as an i-circumflex in
Calibri and the default font Logos uses -- Athelas -- is beyond me). So
it's possible that the text in the ABD is incorrect and it would
need to be fixed by Logos in order for it to be able to display properly
in a wider range of fonts. But that still won't fix the fact that Adobe
Garamond Pro doesn't have a schwa.[EDIT: I tried to fix some formatting ugliness and accidentally removed
part of the post so I reconstructed the missing bits from memory.]0 -
The problem is that some of characters used with some fonts do not have appropriate display characters so they default to boxes, or other displays as you illlustrated. No fix other than to use fonts that do display approriate symbols or live with the occassional wierdness.

I find Adobe Garamond Pro very readable so continue to use it. You can always find out what the missing character is by selecting and right clicking on it: it then appears in the system font in the menus. Only whwere there are lots of Hebrew transliterations do I need to switch to another font.
