IPad2 3G and memory
1. Is 3g essential? benifits?
2. I have a library of 2400+. How much memory do I need? (16-64GB)?

1. Perhaps, if you need the full use of Ipad while you travel. Some pastors find this helpful. Or if you want access to online travel directions. I am retired and watching my budget. Most of the time I intend to use my Ipad is where there is wifi, so I opted out of 3g. Others are more mobile.
2. The largest Logos base package is 8GB as I recall. But with other apps, music & photos etc. I chose the 32GB. If you plan to only go with a medium size package & library and don't intend to have photos & videos, I suppose you could get by with 16GB. With the reduced prices of Ipad 1 some have been getting the 64GB for a reasonable price.
Edit: I didn't notice you posted the size of your library. You may not want to go with 16GB. Others may offer advice.

On my IPad I bought the 64 with 3G and have often regretted it. I have over 2100 books on it and 32 would have been more than adequate. Since I am around wifi almost all the time itnwas silly to buy the 3G version. And I hate paying the extra money for using it. I will say therenhave been a couple of times that I used it out of necessity and in those rare moments was glad I had it.

Mel. I have a 32 gig iTouch (no Wifi), a 32 gig iPhone, and now a 64 gig iPad as of last week. I debated long and hard as to what size iPad I would need. Did I need the the G model or would wifi be fine. Having had an iTouch, I knew that I could get along quite well with the wifi model because hot spots are all over the place... especially at all of the hospitals in our area. After 1 week, I have not regretted this decision. As for size... well, it all depends on that you will do is use it for, only Logos, then the 16 gig is way more than adequate, but if you put some movies, or music, podcasts, other files on it, you will eat up space... movies seem to run about 1 gig each as an average. So I bought the 64 gig iPad not for the space but because I got such a good deal on it and I figured that when I was done with it, 64 gig would have better resale value than would the 32 gig. I have just over 375 apps for my idevices (several for Disney that are only on the device when I go there in January, I have specific vacation apps that are only on when I am on vacation... and several more that I only use occasionally, so only put them on once in a while and then take them right back off. So I don't have them all on my devices at the same time.) However, when I hooked up my iPad to my mac to set it up, it started to sync before I checked and unchecked what I wanted on it, so I just let it go. It added all 13 movies, all of the apps, 9 days worth of music and podcasts, and then I put on my logos. Although I have about 2000 books, I only have about 40 that are used more than occasionally, so I only put 40 books on the iPad... I still have 12 gig free.
So how big of a device do you need? Well, it really depends on how much stuff beyond logos you will add. If you put all of your books on it and only use logos on your iPad, the 16 gig is fine, if you start to add more, then 32 gig is great, if you want room to grow, then 64 gig is a good choice. But one other thing, I have have had my iphone for 13 months, and I have all of my movies, pod casts, Logos as set up above, about 200 apps, several sermons many emails, and in the 13 months I have never had to take anything off except for the apps that I routinely change out so that I can find what I want and house it all on 2 pages, and I still have just over 3 gig free... Logos is small compared to everything else... don't let it overwhelm you, get what you can afford, and you will be able to live with it quite easily. And finally, I might suggest that you not put all of your books on any device since it takes a lot of time. Several have had to reload their books multiple times, and you can not possibly use all of them regularly. I personally have about 40 that I use at least once a month, 10 that I use several times a week, and about 1900 that I use a couple of times a year So I would never consider having them on my iDevice... just food for thought, and I hope that this helps!

Jerry, Garrett, Keelly,
Thanks for the insight . You guys have been a great help. 3G and 32-64GB seems to be the way to go. Also, the tip abt. not putting more books on it than I really need is excellent advice. I have an I phone and I know how long it takes to sync and back-up with just 3.7 GB.
Thanks again,
Mel

1. I got wifi and am not regretting it in the least. I am able to tether to my android if I need internet on the road. Most apps (including Logos) run in offline mode. And there is wifi in most locations. So for Logos, if you plan ahead, and download the resources you need in advance: No you do not need 3g. It could be a nice feature, but for me the upfront cost increase plus monthly fees made it an easy "no" decision.
2. I have managed to fill my 64 GB. I just got a message saying I am out of memory...But Logos only takes a very small portion of this. Logos for the iPad does not store all your books on your iPad. It stores the books in the cloud and only downloads portions of what you are currently reading. You are able to download whole books for offline mode, but you have to do that 1 by 1 (at this time). Even if you downloaded everything, Logos would work on the 16 GB (barely) So the answer to the questions depends on what else besides Logos you will be using.
My recommendation to most people is minimum: 32 GB Wifi; better: 64 GB Wifi

Curious: how did you manage to do that? Music? Video? Apps? (What's the biggest space filler for you?)

What's the biggest space filler for you?
(Not to answer your question directed to Jacob) In logos it is any resource with maps. Commentary series, for example, only seem to take up a small amount of space. For new users, resources without maps load fairly quickly and you can "stage" them. You can be downloading one, and have a couple more waiting to be downloaded. I downloaded NICOT/NICNT and Word Biblical Commentaries in a reasonable amount of time.

All of them. Those three are split about 50%-20%-30%. Apps include documents that I have saved to the iPad.

Mel,
I did not buy 3 g and I am glad that I did not. It would not have been worth the cost to me. That might not be true for others.
I have about the same number of Logos books as you have on my 32G, plus about 250 songs, 2 movies, 10 hours of classic (1960's)TV programs, dozens of other books, three or four audio books, and about 50 apps. Oh, and I have about 125 pictures. I still have 10.9 G free. So I feel that 32G is about right for me.
Logos is my primary reason for buying an iPad. But I also enjoy watching MLB games and some Netflicks. (I can watch the ballgame on my iPad while my wife is watching her program on the TV - wonderful!) I have a Dishnetwork slingbox to watch my home dvr (live or recorded) anywhere there is wifi. That is nice and there is no monthly fee for that feature. I like my astonomy app, too.
However, iPad is really all about reading Logos resources. The rest is a bonus.

Jacob,
I would love to tether my wifi iPad to my android phone. How do you do this?0 -
Jacob,
I would love to tether my wifi iPad to my android phone. How do you do this?It is a feature built into Android 2.2 (froyo) and beyond. Some carriers seem to disable it or try to have you pay for it even though it is built in functionality of the phone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcN7G8aaCdA
