If all my Logos books were physical books and…

…were stacked in a pile, they would they would reach higher than Big Ben.
…were placed in bookcases, I would need 21 IKEA Billy bookcases to store them all in
…were placed on weighing scales, they'd come in at around 2.5 tonnes
…I moved house, they'd need around 130 U-Haul book boxes
Thanks to new stats available at LibraryThing.com. These stats are obviously estimated, and don't include nearly 800 journals I also own.
I say this to remind myself that it is amazing I can carry this library around in my laptop case (and even more amazing that I can carry most of it in my pocket).
(You can view my stats here, but note that when you see them, they'll include my physical books as well as my Logos books.)

What's a "tonnes"? Is that a typo or any actual measurement.

Never mind. I googled it and found out it's that darn metric system[;)]
I remember when I was a kid they had all of us trying to learn the metric system and told us we had to learn it because the U.S. was going to convert everything to the metric system. Yikes[:O]

In the UK, a ton is 2,240 pounds (equals 1,016kg), whilst a tonne is 1,000kg. So we tend to use ton and tonne almost interchangeably. American tons are inferior, at a miserable 2,000 pounds I understand! [;)]

I believe that is called a "long ton" on this side of the pond. I saw "capacity 225 Long Tons" on a crane at Newport News Shipbuilding many years ago. When I inquired as to the weight of a long ton, I was told that it was 2200 pounds. That was a rather large crane. [8-|]

Peace, Mark!
Blessings to you and your family, and may God give you Strength for the joyous Proclamation tomorrow.

I'm wondering how much Library Think costs for membership. I like a number of things that you have done with it that you've shared with us.

Wikipedia has Long Ton article => http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_ton , which is 2,240 pounds. Appears 225 Long Tons = 252 Short Tons (504,000 pounds).
Likewise Thankful for Logos library portability (good reason to reduce number of physical books).
Keep Smiling [:)]

Library Thing has a variable plan, it's rather unique in that you can kind of name your own price within a range.Milford Charles Murray said:I'm wondering how much Library Think costs for membership. I like a number of things that you have done with it that you've shared with us.
But the standard is $10 for a year or $25 for a lifetime membership. As I said it's flexible via a drop down list. Kind of a unique way of doing it I think. :-)
After seeing this, I may just sign up for a membership... perhaps.
Sarcasm is my love language. Obviously I love you.

Mark,
It appears your library only equates to 0.734 elephants...better start feeding the beast. [:P]

Mark,
Is there a good (easy/automated) way to get ISBN's for my books on library thing?

You can use a Wasp Scanner.

So, how does one distinguish in common parlance? I assume "tonne" and "ton" are pronounced the same - do Brits have to ask "do you mean short ton or long tonne?"

Hi Mark
Thank you for this information. Can you tell me if there is an easy way to enter an extensive Logos library into the LibraryThing database without having to make individual manual entries for each resource?
Blessings,
Gary

There are three ways of getting Logos data into LibraryThing, none of which are perfect.
(1) Rick Brannan once wrote a script for Logos 3 which extracted ISBN data for exactly this purpose: http://www.supakoo.com/rick/ricoblog/2005/11/04/LibraryThingAndAddingLDLSResources.aspx- it doesn't work with L4, though. Some books will inevitably be missing because they don't have ISBNs, and it can be difficult to track them down.
(2) You can export your bibliographic data from L4's collections module, and import it into LT. You'll have to export it in something like BibTeX format, then convert to CSV. My website might offer an alternative if you can't do this. There's no ISBNs, so it's not 100% accurate. I think it's what DonDThompson has done with his library. It's not clear in the LT documentation that this works without ISBNs, but it does. Make sure your field names match the ones on their sample.
(3) You can enter everything manually (i.e. open Logos, open your first resource, search for it's title or ISBN in LT, and add it, then repeat). This takes a long time.
Personally, I chose a combination of method (1) and (3), but that's only because method (2) wasn't available when I started. It all depends on how fussy you are at your data being 100% accurate. If you're very fussy, use method (3), if not, I'd recommend (2).
You can experiment on a free account with up to 200 books if you want.

If you import into LT using the method above, then export, I think ISBN data will be added to most of your records.

If we hear ton/tonne, we assume 2,240 pounds if you're above 40, and 1,000kg if you're below 40. As I said, they're almost identical, so it doesn't really matter.
We'd almost never assume 2,000 pounds, which would probably get called American tons, I would think.

Ok, OT but wanted to get it out....
I wish we Americans would just get smart and convert to Metric. It is so much better for Math and just a tiny bit easier to remember conversions.

I still remember my Dad teaching me when I was a kid how many pounds were in a ton (American), and to give me an idea of how much that really was, he pointed out that it was approximately the weight of a VW Beetle, which we had. [From Wikipedia: Curb weight: 840 kg (1,900 lb)]

Do you only get to generate stats with a paid account?
I have uploaded my full library and all my books are there but it's all zeros on the stats like weight, height...etc.

Your upload didn't include authors and publishers. That means LT wasn't able to match your books to the existing ones in the system. I'd delete all your books (use power edit in the "your books" view), check your CSV file, and try again.

Mark,
I used the CSV generated from your site which include authors and publishers but they aren't showing up after upload....I wonder why?

I'm not able to look right now, but check that my column headings match the column headings in LT's example file.
