Who Stole My Books

I have L4 on one laptop and in the stable version it is showing that I have 2374 books. On the same laptop in the beta I have 2385. I did a fresh install and download of the stable version on another machine and it is saying that I have 2376 books.

What is going on here?

I'm not 100% sure of the cause, but it could well be caused by the tiny number of very old L2 books that aren't on Logos server and need to be installed by the original CD. The easiest way to fix it would be to scan the beta resources folder from the stable installation.

Do you mean to scan from the beta resource to the stable resource?

Load the stable version of Logos.

Type SCAN c:\path\to\beta\resource\folder in the command bar (replace with correct path)

You can find what the missing books are by doing a manual binary search:

Open your Library in Grid view on both machines, side-by-side, with the Info panel open in each. Sort both by Title.

Now, in one Library, highlight the first resource, then scroll with the scrollbar thumb down approximately halfway. Shift+Click to highlight all the titles from that first one to where you are midway through your Library. Notice the number of resources selected (shown at the top of the Info panel).

Now go to the other Library and select from the top down to the same title. Look at the number of resources selected. If it's identical, you know that the missing resources come later in the alphabet. If there's a difference of 2 between one machine and the other, then both of the missing resources are in the first half of the alphabet. If the difference is 1, then one missing resource is in the first half and the other is in the second half.

Now depending on the results from the previous paragraph, divide and conquer! Narrow down your selection to 1/4 of your library (first half of the first half if you're hunting for a missing resource in the first half of your library, for example). With binary search, it's remarkable how fast you will hone in on where the discrepancy is. If you have 1024 resources, for example, which is 2 to the 10th power, it will take only 10 steps to find the culprit. 2374 is between 2^11 and 2^12, so it will take about 11 or 12 steps in your library.

Once you've identified the missing books, then you can go about figuring out why they appear on one machine and not the other. A common reason is that if you've been a longtime Logos user (since Logos 2.0 or earlier), they might be older resources that did not get automatically downloaded when you installed L4 on the new machine. You would need to use the scan command to bring them over to that installation.

Thanks the scan command worked. It is now indexing on one machine, waiting for indexing to complete before starting L4 on the next machine.

That's the first time I wrote this up. But I use the concept of binary search (which I learned in my computer science undergraduate training) in all kinds of ways in real life. This is but one example. The key, of course, is that it only works on sorted lists. Otherwise you've no way to narrow the search down to one half or the other of the original list.

EDIT: Everyone who has ever looked up a name in a telephone book knows how to do a binary search intuitively. At least I hope they do, or they'll be turning every single page looking for that name! [:)]

On the new machine, L4 does not seem to realize that it should have 2385 books. It is still listing at 2376. This was a fresh install. Any way to force it to sync. To the best of my memory, when Logos was installed on the old machine, everything was downloaded from scratch. Why is it that it is not picking up what is needed now?

Thanks, Rosie! It was a good read for me, since I have some math background.

As for the telephone book - nope, people are taught to use the alphabet. And it usually helps them only on first division. The book is not usually divided by second letter, so you still do a linear scan.

If the two computers are networked, you could always do it the easy way in the future and use Beyond Compare 3 (there is a free version) and compare the two Resource folders - you'll find the missing file(s) in seconds!

If the two machines are on the same network, use Dominic's method, above.
