I'd encourage a bid for both, but if you have money for only one there is probably a lot of overlap between the two and the Dictionary of the Bible might be the better choice for you.

Yes, yes, let's get both! The Dictionary of the Bible is currently going for only $15, so by the time these both make it into pre-pub, those of us who bid for both might end up getting them both for a total of only $20, or a max of $25.

This is the next resource to push over the top in CP. It's at 80% now. You can see the content here (with no formatting and badly OCR'd, but just to get an idea of the breadth and depth of it; Logos will of course have a near perfect reproduction of the original printed edition). If you've been wanting the IVP dictionaries but can't justify the price, this might fill that gap in your library. It's an older dictionary (1916-1918), but high quality. And for only $10 (or less as will probably be the case), it's hard to turn down.

I read some of the sample pages and seems like it would be a good addition, especially since it concentrates the subjects around the apostolic usage (e.g. how Abraham was treated in the NT).

Other dictionaries like Anchor take a broader approach.

I am shocked and saddened--though not surprised-- that this and all other James Hastings resources are still sitting in limbo. They are priced at ridiculously low prices (I would gladly pay 5 times more than is asked for each), and yet they continue to languish. PEOPLE, now is the time! Sell your car, your boat, or your youngest child. Do what is necessary and bid high on ALL of the Hastings resources. To not do so would be a CRIME...and the judge is watching.

- Explain the NT's usage of 'abide' specifically in the epistles. What was unusual about it?

- Fasting: do you have a good resource discussing the view during the apostolic period?

- How did Clement of Rome coordinate the two views of 'Abraham'?

First, of course, there's the issue of why is the attack needed? I agree it fits in well with the Logos forums.

Second, I got the questions from the sample pages on Logos site for the book. So, that's pretty easy and you could have figured that out yourself.

And third, it appears to me that one of key features of the resource is its concentration in the apostolic period; a period I for one don't have a lot of resources on (my concentration is in the core greek writings).

Does this calm you down a bit?

"Dictionary of the Apostolic Church (2 Vols.) contains all definitions of people, places, and theological terms from the book of Acts to the book of Revelation." (from the CP description)

That is why I have also recommended that anyone buying this set also buy The Dictionary of Christ and the Gospels, to completely cover the NT. The 2 sets really go together. I don't understand why there are so many fewer orders for that set.

I was introduced to Hasting's when I upgraded to platinum with The Great Christian Doctrines.

Then Hasting's entered the cp program and I was quick to add all his titles. I got The Greater Men and Women of the Bible for $9.00. It makes me giggle. The price for this prodoct today is $199.

If you are already in at $10 where the current price is, raising your bid from $10 to hundreds of dollars doesn't accomplish anything - you will still have the same number of bids at $10. Only if you have bid less than $10 will raising your bid to $10 help.

This is exactly the wrong thing to do. If it crosses now, it will close this Friday. If the price does not cross the line until Thursday, the item won't close until the next Friday.

Alex ... I think you're right. As I understand the algorithm, you cycle from the bottom price, count the bidders at/above that price, multiply, and see what the percent of cost is. Then cycle to the next price up and repeat, not counting anyone below.

So moving the bid up (as I did) from $10 would do nothing to the equation (anyone at $10+ was already counted).

However, I'd really just like to see this little puppy bark! $10 or $8 ... I'm sure he'd bark just as good. Some folks like to save $2 though, so ok.

Actually, I think if enough people moved their bids up from $10 to say $30, wouldn't that just raise the price? The new crossing would be over $10, probably around $12 or $15, depending.

Jeff, I think that's what we're all unsure of; does a higher price drag lower prices up and thus closer to the 100% mark for their price point. Many of the CP graphs would suggest this yet however some are extremely steep atcertain price points suggesting a huge majority of users agreed on the same pricepoint. Very perplexing! [;)]

Well now I'm going to disagree with myself; Higher price points do effect those around them because often times users won't jump in until they're notified by automatic e-mail that a resource has crossed the threshold. Then these "low bidding" users pile in on the obvious peak and the price starts falling dramatically depending on how many days it has left before Friday at noon PST. With the Dictionary of the Apostolic Church, I'm afraid we'll be lucky if it moves down at all. It seems to be suffering from "Barnes" syndrome of driving one price point for a long period of time. So many people have piled in at $10 its unlikely a significantly higher number of people will join in once the auto e-mails go out. I can remember back to last year when the 5 Hastings resources were all that were available on CP.

So simplifying the equation further, the only people NOT contributing to the above equation are those below the target price (and thus Alex's point).

Bidding high does effect the final price because the final price is not based on what people are willing to pay; rather it is based on the production cost of the resource. The percentages reflected in the graph is how close (or far) from 100% of the production cost being covered. That is why the price goes down once it crosses the 100% line and people continue to place bids.
