I'm an old-school logos users from way back, now catching up with the 21st century
In rapid succession, I moved from the ancient Logos 2.0 Level 4 (plus extras) to Logos 3, then used the minimal crossgrade (no longer offered?) to upgrade to Logos 4, and then even learned to use the iPod and Biblia versions.
First, a few questions I've not resolved on Logos 4. Then a few hints for others who may be new to the software (things the developers might consider in terms of making the system easier to approach...)
Questions
1) There are a few basic items from older versions that I simply can't find anywhere. Any ideas? Two examples:
a) the Logos 3 "Alerts" that tell me about new and free books (I see things in the logos 3 alerts page that are NOT shown on the new Home page, no matter what I enable.)
b) The ability to see all of my available resources, both locked and unlocked. I can see the current library, but how do I know the full extent of what I own, and/or *could* own? It is quite difficult to guess whether I have what I should have.
2) I appear to be missing some but not all Reverse Interlinears. I am guessing that this relates to either a glitch in the upgrade process or (my own?) confusion about versions. To whit:
a) After much prayer and gnashing of teeth, I discovered that the KJV I was looking at, which was missing RI's, is the "Authorized Version"... and I also have the "real" KJV which contains RI's.
b) I can't see RI's in my NASB. Now I see (online and on IOS) that I have access to both NASB and NASB95 -- but the version of NASB in my Logos 4 on my PC is NASB (not 95?) Do I need to do something to synch/download/update so my Logos 4 has access to the same resources I have available elsewhere?
c) I see a notice that NIV NT now has RI. Mine doesn't. Perhaps similar to (b)... I now see there's NIV and NIV84 -- I have NIV84. Same question as (b)
Hints
These are some things that were not obvious at the outset. None of these are in any menus anywhere, and are not documented (at least in any obvious way.) This app appears to follow the "social learning" paradigm: you can't know how to use many of the most useful features unless/until you find someone else who can show you the secrets
... so, here are some of the secrets!
1) Want to know what has been updated in your library? There are hidden columns in your library list! Right click on a column header and you'll see a list of available columns. Drag the bottom right corner of the list to expand it. Drag column headers left/right to rearrange. Click on column headers to sort.
2) Want to know which of the Bibles in your library have the Reverse Interlinear feature available? There's a hidden list: open up a word search (Guides->Bible Word Study) on any word. In both the Hebrew and Greek panes, on the top right (if you mouse over the heading) you'll find a hidden "Settings" dropdown. Click on that and you will see a list of versions!
3) Want to force an update of your library resources? In the data entry field to the right of the "Tools" menu, type "update resources" and then click on the first entry that shows up below! [Question: is there a list anywhere of the commands available for this "command line" tool?]
Comment: To me, these are good examples of how Logos 4 DOES have many wonderful features... that are seriously hidden. In my opinion, having these hidden menus is nice, but NOT at the expense of eliminating the top menus. There is great value in having a menu "tree" where one can find all the features of an app.
