Font Size Tied to Layout

I've taken to using Logos directly in studies, which tends to add more interest and "rabbit trails" to the actual study, rather than just slides. The problem is that when I push logos 4 onto my screen, the typeface is really, really small... So I have to go in and adjust it. Then when I open logos on my desktop, or my laptop, well, the typeface is really, really big, so I have to go back and adjust it all again.

It would be really nice to have the ability to tie the typeface size or overall program scaling to a layout. This way I could create a "study presentation" layout, or some such, and have it set with the scaling so it makes sense on the big screen, or projector. I could then just select a different layout when I open logos on a different machine...

Any possibility of tying the scaling to the layout, or having a per layout scaling?

I'm not at all certain regarding what I'm about to say so I may be simply giving you wrong information, but I think it might be tied to the way you saved your layout. I would suggest you adjust the size of the font to your liking then go to "Layouts" at the top right of the screen and click on the pencil on the layout labelled "Now" and type the name of your layout into it. You can then close the layout, reopen it, and see whether it worked.

This works for a particular resource --such as the Bible or a commentary-- but you must do this per window. Notes and the menus are not larger this way, either. I suppose what I mean is that it would be nice if the program scaling could be tied to the layout, so notes, searches, and everything are much larger. The biggest issue is the Biblical Word Study panel --these are quite useful to do on the fly, but they are always in the smaller typeface, unless you scale the entire program, and then you must remember to "descale" it when you switch back to doing study normally, rather than projecting.

There are three ways of changing the size of resource text:

Changing Program Scaling (affects every resource on that machine)
Changing Default Text Size (affects every resource that is still set to default, on every machine)
Changing Resource Text Size (affects a single resource on every machine)

I keep some shortcuts on my shortcut bar to switch the program scaling between 90%, 120% and 140%. Perhaps you could do something similar? It's just one click then.

I see what you mean about the text size on BWS not sticking, maybe this should be reported as a bug in the beta forum.

How can you put a program scaling shortcut on the shortcut bar? I don't see any way to drag it there... ?? I've poked around the wiki, and some other places, but don't see it there, either.

From the command bar. Type in set program scaling to 90% and drag the appropriate drop down to the shortcut bar. Or whatever percentage you want it to be.

Contrary to what I said earlier, if you make a change in the font size in a Bible Word Study panel, Logos will remember that font size when you reopen that guide later.

Notes don't have the "slider bar" to increase their size or not, so that doesn't work. The idea of putting the quick buttons to change the scaling is the best so far --but it would still be better to be able to tie the scaling to the layout...

I suppose you also want the program to remember what books you had open at one time and restore those, and then remember a different set of books at a different time, and restore those, without being forced to do anything more than choosing a single option, right? So it seems to me that you want the program to read your mind, as well.

Only the entire concept behind what you call "reading your mind," is simply called a "layout," in Logos. Layouts currently contain a number of things, but the one thing they don't contain is the program scaling setting. I can't see how asking for the layout to contain the program scaling as well as the set of open books and locations is "reading my mind," any more than asking it to remember different sets of books and locations that are open.

Sorry, I didn't realise you were trying to do this in notes. As you say, program scaling is all that will help you there.

I understand why you'd want to tie program scaling to layouts, and it would work in this case. But I think most users will probably prefer not. Currently scaling is a per-machine setting (so I can have different scaling on my high-res desktop to my little netbook), and doesn't get synced. Text size is saved in the layout and (apart from with notes), I think is best way forward.

If notes had a text-size option, wouldn't that solve your problems, given that per-window text-size is saved with the layout?

I say again that it was not sarcasm but a statement of fact. Yes, I do want the program to remember which books I have open and restore them -- when I choose the appropriate layout. Also, it is necessary to re-save the layout if I make changes to it such as reading further in a book. Therefore, I don't expect the program to read my mind, but you seem to want the program to determine what you want and supply it without any input on your part.

One work around is to use the commands, set default text size to ?, set program scaling to ? and set default notes text size to ?. You can either drag those commands from the command window to the shortcut bar or to favorites. Have one setting each for presentation and normal use. For either purpose you would only be two or three clicks away. Of course if this could be incorporated into layouts all the better.

Edit: It is not that simple since the resources will "remember" the larger font even though the font scale goes back to the previous setting.

I can see why Russ wants to save "text size" attributes in each layout....I'd like that too...

English text at one size..."hard to read for my old eyes" greek text at another font size....and each one in their respective layouts....

I understand and I agree...sometimes I want to have HUGE fonts with certain layouts for certain reasons...

Just like a window placement attribute....or a "floating window" or "resource location" attribute...it would be nice to have control over this also...(and while messing with this I noticed that interlinear display choices are not saved per layout...that would also be nice

Agreed on tying all the settings (including resource size) to a layout... I use Logos real time in Bible studies, also. And, same as you, I find that it opens up MANY lucrative bunny trails. We sometimes have more fun exploring several other books across the Bible in addition to the enjoying main entree, the book we're studying.

What'll work particularly well for a projector is the ability to leave ALL the resource settings alone & scale the entire program (menus, resources, notes, etc.) up for a projector & back when done. Love it!

I'm using Logos with a projector, too, for Bible studies. The projector resolution is only 1024 x 768. And some class members have vision problems. I've found myself scaling resources used in the Bible study up to 150% so they can read them on screen.

Problem is, I don't want it scaled that big when I'm working with a monitor or even just my laptop. I only want 100% or 110% scaling, then.

Your scaling solution for the entire program is the real answer... even after getting the "normal" notes scaling how we want it.
