Hi Steve,
Please please please give us back something that is even remotely close to the Libronix 3 "Bible speed search"
Logos 4 has Search (while typing) which appears to do the same thing as L3's Bible speed search.
Perhaps i am missing something? It runs pretty fast even on my 4 year old laptop.
How did you get yours to "choose" the NIV 1984. Mine simply spins its wheels and refuses to allow individual bibles to be chosen
EDIT: It took "forever" to even get to allow me to choose NIV versions.
My pc is not having any slow down on selecting the Bible version.Do you have other resources open? (i only have the Search window open)What words are you trying to search for? If you show me then i could try them as well.
EDIT: perhaps you need to restart L4 and close everything but the Search window (try to eliminate other things to narrow down the problem). You might also want to turn Logging On and post your log for those who can read them.
The phrase I was searching for turned out to be in 1 Peter 3 15.
I had a passage guide plus 2-3 resources open. I eventually closed all of them.
I had only just started up Logos-there was no time for it to get bogged down in anything else.
It still just wants to offer me "Top Bibles, All open bibles, and all bibles.
It takes a long while to get an individual choice recognized (typing in KJV or NIV)
I changed searches, asking it to find "am I my brothers keeper" in the OT. It still would not offer any other Bible choices. The search took 27.66 seconds.
EDIT: Do we have to manually create all of our own reference ranges/Bible books that we want to search? ie. tell Logos 4 that we want to only search Paul's letters? I seem to remember a drop down in Libronix with more variations that could be chosen?
i would turn Off the while typing and then see if a regular Bible search was working. And if the Bible selections worked properly in that mode.
Are you running the Beta version or using a Mac?
i tried searching in Top Bibles and it took a little longer with 2000+ hits
Then i tried searching am i my brother's keeper in the NIV84 and it found 1 occurrence in Genesis, pretty fast too.
Sounds like something is amiss in your system. i would check as i first suggested to see if something is messed up in your Bible Index.
This is the latest "beta" (if that makes any difference to Searches?)
With the search while typing OFF and doing the same search "am I my brother's keeper" was down 6 seconds to 21.05. It said 149 results in 2 verses-about 20 different translation "boxes" were shown horizontally across the page [Are any search resujlts cached?]
But it then took a full 30 seconds to get the "All Bibles" window to allow me to choose from my collections--I timed that again and it took 50 seconds for the "All Bibles" window to show any of the collections.

Do you have a large number of collections or tagged resources? i read in one of the current threads that Rosie had 200 collections and it was pretty slow to display the Bible in Search. Since turning Off 'while typing' sped up the search and it was successful probably indicates that your Bible Index is OK. i am running 4.2aSR-4, so if you are running the Beta perhaps someone else should check to see if 'while typing' is responding slow as well.
EDIT: just for a point of reference here is what i see with 'while typing' is Off and 'All Bibles' selected
Do you have a large number of collections or tagged resources? i
I've not counted-not sure how-but YES to both, collections and tags
I had chosen "old Testament" rather than "All passages". Why would that have made such a difference? I thought it would speed things up by reducing numbers of books , chapters etc?
Here is the current post that Rosie was seeing a similar issue (look in the 2nd paragraph) http://community.logos.com/forums/p/32512/242356.aspx#242356
Here is where Bradley noted that many collections could be an issue (in reply to Rosie): http://community.logos.com/forums/p/32512/242928.aspx#242928
EDIT: she has a load of resources and you might also. i have only about 700 resources and a little over a dozen collections, but have quite a few tagged resources which also shows up in the drop down menu in Search. She is running the beta version i think, so i am not sure if this is related to the beta or just the number of resources/collections.
EDIT2: you might want to reply to Bradley's reply in the above post to let him know that Rosie's issue is not an isolated case.
NovaBench Score: 854 This is quite a good score but no where near Rosie's "mongo" score[:)].
But we do have similar problems "spinning wheels" etc.
And even with quite a nice machine:
I've started to "uncheck" most/all of my visual filters. I keep all of the "follow" tools off.
I rarely "link" resources.
I uncheck all of the "Cited by" collections. [:'(]
i think you are remembering Basic Search in L3. Bible Speed Search only allows you to select which resource to search.
I do have quite a few resources. And, yes, I've just (tried) to post near to Bradley's answer.
Thanks Steve
I must turn in as it is now almost 1:30 am here.
thanks
steve

You are running quiet a bit better than me
Guess you are trying to reduce L4 loading per Speeding up Logos 4 responses
There is definitely something that L4 does differently regardless of hardware. It might have more to do with the number of resources, collections, and background things turned On (per my above link).
Yes I've also done those steps.. And it will be a very long time before thisnew computer gets an upgrade.
I'm convinced the pretty "bells & whistles" are in here for the "beginner" crowd. Too many resources and they shut right down.
I'm hoping the Sermonfile and PBB also do not cause further speed degradation or I will really be sunk. Disheartning after almost 18 months.
I mostly just load a "stripped down" customized passage guide and look at one book at a time or open up Libronix 3.
Searching Top Bibles took 2.7s on my Laptop with a Novabench score of 700 (3 results in 3 resources).
I had to create that myself! The choice is deliberately basic (Common) because of the number of different bible versification schemes & the need to keep the list as compact as possible.
o we have to manually create all of our own reference ranges/Bible books that we want to search? ie. tell Logos 4 that we want to only search Paul's letters? I seem to remember a drop down in Libronix with more variations that could be chosen?
There are some default values but I found it desirable to add a number more of my own.

For my laptop it took 1.6seconds with a Novabench score of 268 (so slightly faster results than Dave with a signficantly lower-speced machine).
SteveF - definitely seems something strange going on with your machine. As per Steve,s suggestion, can you post logs from when doing the search?
Graham
That search took me 16s for 141 results in 20 verses in 20 bibles. Not sure about your 2 verses as the result was in one verse in each bible. Note that a phrase search (with the quotes) only returns Gen 4:9 in 18 bibles.
Your result could come from a Grid search (post a screen shot if necessary), which will take a little longer than Verses. Some disk caching is performed by Windows, so an immediate re-run will be faster.
Surprisingly, it is slower because of the additional processing to determine that a result belongs to the specified range ie. OT, NT. But it is much improved over the original 4.0 version where "All Passages" was adopted as the default!
For my laptop it took 1.6seconds with a Novabench score of 268
After that first run it took 1.2s (Windows caching).
I did the "am i my brother's keeper" search while typing and except for the "screen recorder induced time lag...the search was pretty fast.
My machine is middle of the road or to the low end of the spectrum...certainly not in Rosie's or George's realm....

But you cheated - it is supposed to be using the range Old Testament, which takes more time!
Whoops...I missed that important piece of info!
Here is my search using OT as the range...worse, but still pretty good...

Thank you to all for the input offered.
I will add some of my own "custom" search parameters (as long as that does not further slow things down.
Graham, which of the (4?) logs would be helpful?
Hi SteveF
I would go with the "Logos4" logfile
Changing from Grid to verses made it worse.
5808.Logos4.zip
0083.Logos4Crash.zip
6813.Logos4Indexer.zip
Probably do not need crash log. Pretty sure I do not need to include "setup" or "library instal" logs either?
Thanks Robert.
I am going to have to change something.
Perhaps restricting searches to Top Bibles as you have.
Searching all of them is not helping.
I restarted Logos and switched to the "easier" settings.
All passages & top bibles
Logos 4 likes "easy"
7357.Logos4.zip
Steve,
I also hadn't realized that you used "all bibles" whoops!
I tend to use "targeted resources" like "English bibles" or "Favorite bibles" because it's counter productive to look for an English word in Greek and Hebrew bibles....it's just not efficient.
Similarly, when I'm trying to answer a "theological" question that seems to be best answered in a systematic theology resource or a journal....I only search those collections because I'm SURE that I won't find the answer in "Leading your church into the 21's century...." or "...10 ways to a happy Christian marriage...."
Does that makes sense?
Yep! that was the worst search yet for me....Old Testament and All bibles...yuk...17 seconds...
I tend to use "targeted resources"
..I only search those collections because I'm SURE
Yes, plus I think that I need to rename or reorganize one of my Bible collections
