Keeping track of what you have read

Would some of you share how you keep track of what you have read in your logos library? I am not talking about reading of small portions in a book or commentary for research or sermon preparation.

Do you rate the books you have read? Or do you use highlighting? What about an article in a journal or in a dictionary? If there are many articles in e.g. the journals about an issue, you want to spend your time on the articles you have not yet read. Do you have a system that help you remembering?

I have to admit that I sometimes start reading something just to recognize that I have read this before...

I do this:

tag (My Tags in Library) any new readable resource as Unread
drag the resource tab to Favorites to create a bookmark (you can drag it into multiple folders for different bookmarks)

I don't have a method, but here are a couple of ideas.

One thought is to add a resource to Favorites when you read it - perhaps add a Read favorites folder and add a book when it is read. This isn't a real convenient method, you would always have to keep checking Favorites, so idea two might work better.

A second method is probably more helpful - create a notes file called Read Resources or some such, and at the start of any resource or article, add a note to your Read Resources file. That way, whenever you open the resource or go to the start of the article, you will see the link to the note and you will know you have read that before.

I use a note file and divide my books into three sections as per screenshot. I remind myself to always look at the last link to guarantee that I start where I left off. I usually leave the preceding link there (at least for a while) in the event I want to refer to it again.

I do highlighting in my individual books; however, I don't need it for this simple note file. By sorted I mean that I can drag and drop the book I want to read next to the top of my list.

I'm glad you've posted because I think I will start a note file re. reading in my Journals and keep that separate!

Although simple, I tag any book I want to read as "To Read" and "Read Completed" for those I have finished. I got this idea from someone's forum post, but I can't remember who.

As Ronald does, I tag "ToRead" and "Read". Additionally, I plug in a note at the beginning with the month/year I finished reading the resource along with some concise notes for future reference.

Because it will not be possible for me to read all of my Logos books before He calls me Home (I think it unlikely that I will attain the age of Methuselah!), I need to set priorities.

That's why I like my note file idea (above a couple of posts) because it allows me to:

1. Choose which books I want to read.

2. Sort them in the order I want to read.

3. Permit me to open them where I left off, even though I may have used the book for a possible study.

4. This permits me to have several books that I am in the process of reading together at the top of my list. I do that with dead tree books also, reading 4 or 5 or even more interchangeably in a day or week or a month.

Thank you for your replies! They were useful. I also picked up some ideas from the other threads.

For
books I like the idea of tagging the resources TOREAD, READING and
FINISHED. That will help me to keep track of the books on my PC. When I
read a book on my iPad it will open both places at the last read page. It will then be easy to follow this up because it is limited how many books you have time to read.

But it is more difficult with articles. Because of the length it is possible to read many articles during a year. And tagging is not possible for articles. Any other who have a
good way of keeping track on read articles? Attaching a note to the read
articles could be a solution, but since I do most of that kind of
reading on my iPad that would not be easy to follow up? If I understand
it correct it is not possible to use favorites and folders, or notes, in iPad.
