Hi,

I want to use syntax search (OpenText) to find the following pattern (John 1:49) in NT i.e Complement followed by predicate. My problem is that I don't know how to match the qualifier because it crosses over the predicate. Please help. Thanks.

When graph lines cross each other (or 'tangle'), you need to use the 'gap' object to account for it.

Unfortunately, gaps are tricky to figure out. In this case the Predicator line from the 'P' onward is the gap content; it is the object 'tangled' in the qualifier's modification of the head term. The gap needs to be placed in the right-most portion of the query that it can be. With those (very basic and poorly explained) principles in mind, we come to the below query (you might want to click and open a larger version of the query to see what's going on with it). Also *very* important is that the object following the Gap object have the "Matching skips levels" option selected.

Running this query I locate 31 similar results in the NT, mostly in the gospels.

    Hope it helps.
