Hi All.
I hope I will be forgiven for posting a copy of an email that I am sending out to reach as large an audience as possible, as I realize that this is not quite a topic that concerns Logos per se. I am really just hoping that this will help to reach someone that could have a significant input to the project.
Christianity has been practised and studied in
Africa for two thousand years, but the
development of African Christianity is not well documented at all. There are
many notable scholars that have grown and developed in Africa and who have done
wonderful studies and advanced the development of Christianity as well as the
Church. There are a myriad of denominations that are active in Africa today,
from the mainline ecumenical churches with large congregations to the church
under a tree with a very small but dedicated group of Christians.
The focal points of Christianity are
rapidly shifting away from the west, and onto the global South, and if Africa is
going to take its place as a leader of the Christian faith, it needs to raise up
theological scholars and leaders.
Very few people know anything about
African Christianity, its leaders, its writers and theologians. The Encyclopedia
of African Christianity (www.acwiki.org) hopes to remedy that situation. The goal of this
encyclopedia is to gather information about the history, development, scholars
and growth of Christianity in Africa and make these resources available to a
broad readership. We are using the same software and open source philosophy as
Wikipedia and we hope that as many as possible will contribute to the
project.
We as the South African Theological
Seminary are appealing to all institutions to contribute to the wiki so that a
formidable database of knowledge, that would be available to all, could be
compiled. We are looking forward to your input.
Yours in Christ
Bert Barnes (Coordinator of the Encyclopedia of African
Christianity project).
