Speed Issues

The Logos 4 Mac program has always seemed to run slow on my machine. I ask the following question to be sure. I have noticed the phrase 'enabling 64 bit kernel' several times on this forum and just want to check to be sure I am taking advantage of this. My machine is a 2.8 GHz intel Core i7 Mac desktop with 16 GB of memory.

Wiki page Mac Troubleshooting has Slow Performance section with Activity Monitor screen shot. When 64 bit kernel enabled, "kernel_task" has "Intel (64 bit)"

I still haven't gotten around to enabling 64 bit, since I've assumed that would 'kill' my dear old AppleWorks. When I follow those links, however, it seems like that shouldn't happen. Is that correct?

On the other hand there might be another problem: somewhere on Apple's pages I was instructed to check "Extensions", and found 6 with "No" in the 64-bit column. 5 of those where updated as late as March, so I'm assuming they won't cause any trouble, but the 6th is not only a bit older, it's also got "Logitech" in the name. Does that mean that I'll lose the keyboard and mouse if I switch?

Option: use Disk Utility to copy bootable partition to another partition for 64 bit testing (can be an external drive).

Logos 4 Mac is a 32 bit application that works fine (faster) with 64 bit kernel.

On a 2.8 GHz Quad Core i7 iMac with 64 bit kernel was using a Logitech trackball (did not have Logitech's extensions installed). Personally choose to do a clean Mac OS X 10.6 installation on Quad Core i7 iMac without Rosetta (PowerPC emulation) so not know about AppleWorks compatibility. Thankful for Apple iWorks applications and Libre Office. Apple improved TextEdit (defaults to Rich Text Formatting).

I know. [:(] I really need to find time to look for a good replacement, and then much more time to convert hundreds of old files, somehow. The real challenge is all my old MacWrite Pro files, that can't be read by anything even remotely modern.

Yes, except that page says you can't do the trial version with a wireless keyboard. And making a permanent switch with Terminal, only to find that the keyboard no longer works, doesn't seem like the best of ideas... However, Apple's page doesn't say anything in particular about wireless keyboards, so I'll give it a try, but not until tomorrow, when it's easier to get support, if something should go wrong.

I think I'm correct in saying 64 bit was only available with the issue of Snow Leopard, so you will need that.

64 bit kernel is not activated by default, so unless it has been deliberately enabled then it probably will not be running. You can check by clicking the Apple logo at the top left of your task bar, then clicking on "Software", that should show the state of the 64 bit kernel.

To activate reboot your system while holding down the 6 key, this will boot you into 64 bit, then see if everything works for you, I have no problems with any of my software even though much of it wasn't written for 64 bit. I do believe some drivers for non-Mac add-ons may have problems.

If you do have problems reboot holding down the 3 key to boot into 32 bit mode.

If 64 bit works then I would suggest download a free application called "K64 Enabler" this enables you to turn 64 bit on and off without the need to hold down the desired keys at boot up. (re boot is required to make the changes)

I had to hold down the 4 and 6 keys to get into 64-bit. It was definitely twice as fast bringing up Logos 4 and a number of other applications I tried.

Woooo... My mistake!

Of course it is hold down 6 and 4 keys for 64 bit, and 3 and 2 for 32 bit. It has been so long that I have needed to change it this way I had forgotten.

I should have checked it before posting. Thank you for pointing out my error.

I can report that holding down 64 on my wireless keyboard works, provided I use the "normal" part of it; on the numerical part it doesn't. And the extension doesn't seem to cause any troubles; the keyboard seems to work normally under 64 bit. Haven't had time to check AppleWorks out properly yet, or test whether there's any measurable improvement in L4.
