Off Topic: D.Min. in South Central Texas

Friends,

 I'm thinking about jumping back into school for a D.Min. Are there seminaries in south central Texas (or elsewhere) you would recommend? I'm Baptist, so I'm inquiring at Truett Seminary (Baylor University) and Southwestern in Ft. Worth. Other worthy schools I should consider? I don't mind at least entertaining the thought of branching out a bit.

Isn't Southwestern Theological Seminary both in Texas and Baptist? I'm going from memory on this.

I'm going to (more than normal) display my ignorance a bit. But you pass Dallas Theological on the way from Baylor to Southwest (assuming you don't take the I-35W shortcut). But I don't know the exact details and thus this may be out in left field.

Our church was blessed to have one of the Deans from Southwestern
Baptist Theological Seminary fill in as interim pastor for about 1.5
years (Dr. David Allen). i was very impressed with his skills as pastor.
He would on occasion bring in other faculty to preach when he had

in their fields when they preached. If i was looking to go to seminary, i would probably first look at this one.

i got my D.Min at DTS.  They took some of my post-masters credits from California State University. That shortened my program. I also did the maximum hours of independent/directed study. My research project evaluated a seminary PhD program in Latin America. I ended up taking a few intensives on the DTS campus (I do not live anywhere near there). Show then what you have and tell them what you want to do. I am sure they will work with you. They have both ATS and regional accreditation (SACS), so your credential will be accepted almost anywhere. D.Min programs are mostly about ministry not theology so theological perspectives are only a minor consideration.

Aren't D.Min. programs essentially external with the exception of some seminars? While having a seminary within comfortable driving distance is obviously a plus, I wouldn't limit it to location. Rather, I would look at the individual programs or concentrations offered, regardless of location. Southwestern and Dallas, for instance, should be very good. If I were looking at a D.Min. (after I came to from the concussion created by my wife's frying pan!), I would look at Southern Seminary's (Louisville) D.Min. in Expository Preaching or D.Min. in Biblical Spirituality or D.Min. in Applied Theology (I really like the idea of this one).

Whatever you choose, I trust it will prove most beneficial to you and your ministry.

D.Min. programs aren't offered on their website just yet but redeemer seminary recently opened a campus in Dallas as of 2009.  The faculty sounds top notch!  I'd be curious to know what seminaries are not pursuing online degrees and D.Mins at that.

Thanks again for the great advice.  I've settled on the program at George W. Truett Seminary on the Baylor University campus in Waco, TExas. I like the "concentration" organization of their plan: There is a broader base of general topics covered, plus your "specialty." Other schools offered a "track" plan: you focus intently on one area from the beginning. I've always been a bit of a "general practitioner." Also, they are letting me submit my application for this fall's classes even though the deadline is past. Flexibility is good!
