Searching later addition in the NT

I was looking for a way to search for all the occurrences of texts that are assumed to be later additions to the NT. Texts like John 8, Mk 16:9..., 1 John 5:7, etc.

I noticed that in some modern Bibles these texts are omitted. E.g NIV and ESV do not have the additions in Mt 6:13 and 1 John 5:7. Only with large texts like the case with John 8 and Mk 16, they put the text and add a note stating the case with the text.

However, in my Portuguese Bible I have all the texts, but they are between square brackets. So, a friend of mine suggested that we could try to search for square brackets to find all the occurrences that we are looking for, but square brackets are for constructing queries, therefore the search engine does nor recognize it as a valid search criteria. So, does any one have a suggestion on how I could search for these texts?

I know you will not have a Portuguese Bible, but if by any chance you find a way to search for square brackets, you can find it in the ESV, in Mk 16:9. Notice that they use double brackets. This should not be a problem. I believe that if you can search for double square brackets, you can do so with single square brackets.

You could try a Bible Search in your Portuguese Bible using this field:

I'm not sure it will work, because it will depend on whether the Bible you're searching in is tagged with that info for all later additions. If the search doesn't turn up anything in your Portuguese Bible you could try it in an English Bible. Again, it will depend on how thorough the tagging is.

You'd have to use the wildcard character * as the search text in order to match any possible text that is tagged as a later textual addition, and unfortunately Logos is extremely slow with wildcard searches.

I tried it in my ESV, and it only found Mark 16:9-20 and John 7:53-8:11:

I'm not patient enough to try it in other translations, as it took a while.

The Later Textual Addition field is specific to a few Bible, the ESV and NIV have it. The NASB95 does not. Check your Bible to see if it appears or something like the NASB95 (below) appears.

In the NASB95 you can search in a field called 'Translator's Note' for the word 'later'. You will get some hits that are not later MSS insertions, but just a reference to the word 'later' used in translation, but it will work.

In further playing around with this I discovered that the Holman Christian Standard Bible seems the easiest to discover disputed text in (at least in the New Testament). Here is a search I constructed that yields 44 disputed verses:

Some Bibles have no way to search this information (the NET Bible for one). Others handle disputed text in footnotes rather than by inserting the words in the text in brackets, and those words cannot be discovered through a search (the NIV211 and the ESV both do this). The ESV has the same 'Disputed Text' field as the HCSB but the above search yields only 23 verses because of this way of handling the text. EDIT: Rosie's wildcard search found 24 results in the ESV versus my 23. That is the better way to go but I got tired of waiting for the search to complete so created the one you see.

I'm proud of myself, that I found the same thing (coming from the thread the other day about OT quotations, which also are tagged in HCSB). Not searching for words, but for * brings up 48 verses, but takes a little bit longer (at least on my non-mongo machine)

Thank you Mark. That is a very interesting approach. Actually, your example on searching for translator's notes gave me some new ideas for other searches.

Now, back to this case, I need now to try your suggestions. I was just waiting for my last search to finish. I searched for all Later Textual Addition in all Bibles. So it took quite a while. And unfortunately I could not get the result I want. See the result below:

Tried Search ‘All English Bibles’ (a collection) For ‘all text’ in ‘MARK’ (search limit) for ‘Later Textual Addition’
[Sounded like my Laptop was going to take off] [fans at full speed] [i-3 with all 4 logical cores hitting 80%++]
ONLY HITS were in: NIV, ESV, NLT {as Mr Tomazini also found}
Took 361 seconds 13 verses in 3 recourses [Mark 16:8-20] Then Logos 4 crashed [first time that has happed to me]

[re booted and Logos came up OK and did not hound me not to do that again]

If we can get one of the KJV Bibles marked with the Later Textual Addition tag we will be all set - KJV seems to have everything that others want to throw out

David, it seems that only ESV uses the Tag "Later textual addition" whereas HSBC uses "disputed passage" - the other bibles in my Logos don't have such tags (I don't have NLT or the NIV2011). Note that the search phrase really speeds up the thing! But I had to engineer it based on my knowledge that it needs to be at least 48 verses...

It also seems that ESV rather leaves out - the ( \ ) hits - or untagged - the [ ] , tagging only the story of the adulteress and the longer closing of Mark, whereas HSBC takes the verses in and puts them into brackets as well as tags them "disputed".

HCSB offers a reliable, quick, method via Footnote text:

      "Other mss read"
      "Other mss add"
      "Other mss omit"

For the same result as Disputed passage use "other mss omit bracketed"

I believe the most accurate result that I could get was by performing the following search in the NASB95:

At least I could verify all the later additions that I am aware of. But this search is not limited to later additions, it retrieves also disputed texts. Anyway, with this result I can go to all the results and find out which texts are claimed to be later additions. In addition to that I made a filter from the result and called it "text-critic concern." So anytime I am reading the NASB95, if I see a highlighted footnote, I know there is a text-critical concern on that passage:
