This is weird; I can highlight and erase without drama, except for a couple of spots in the ESV that are highlighted and won't erase. Even using the ctrl-shift-k shortcut.
What am I doing wrong?

Sometimes the highlighting from a search is confused with manual highlighting. Could that be the problem?

Could it be that highlighting is being shown from a Visual Filter? Try clicking on the Visual Filter icon and turning Off all Visual Filters.

Bingo, it's to do with visual filters; specifically linked notes.
Only 2 out of many are doing it, so I can play around with the, and see what sets it off.
