What is Minimum Purchase required?

I have a mission partner friend living on a faith basis who does biblical teaching in various parts of Asia. She is an academic with a PhD in Old Testament. She is really interested in getting Logos for language work to help her teaching. However she cannot afford the full Original Languages Package and would like to start small and very slowly build up as gifts are received. She could go for BibleWorks but Logos has the possibility of adding academic commentaries etc in the future which would be really useful and so seems to have longer term potential

It is cheaper for her to get the Basic Home Package and add Language Books than buy Original Language Package, but even that has lots of books she really doesn't want. Could she just get the books she wants without a base package i.e. does the search engine come with the books.

The Minimal Crossgrade is cheaper than the Home Package and just as useful, could she buy that with the books she wants? As a kind of really basic package? All advice welcome.

Yes, sure! She can start with the completely free engine and the free books ( http://wiki.logos.com/Free_Logos_Books ) and then add the minimal crossgrade (or vice versa). I recommend the crossgrade.

The cheapest way to obtain resources other than free is through Community Pricing and then through Pre-Pub, but both of these ways may require some patience (or sometimes a lot of) as to when the resources will be finally delivered. She may buy and download existing resources immediately, there is no minimum purchase or anything. She can buy any books she want - it maybe helps to look out for
discounts (March and Christmas) and facebook or twitter specials.

Actually I do have some 300+ resources in Logos (and a couple of dollars spent), but don't have a base package right now.

The Logos 4 engine is free. Anyone can download and install it. However, you need resources to run with it. The minimal cross-grade does not actually include all the Bibles for which the Reverse Interlinear function is provided and in those cases will not work. Maybe that isn't clear. For example, the NIV is not included so the provided RI is of no value until one purchases the NIV.

The best bargain in Logos is almost always the largest package one can afford. Buying individual resources can get very expensive, which is why larger packages are usually the best choice.One can upgrade from one package to the next at any time, but that route is slightly more expensive (but still often the best way to obtain the resources one wants).

If your friend were to take out of the Original Languages Library what she would not use and add up the individual prices of what is left, I'll bet the package price would still be much better. If that is the case, I think I would try to wait (save up) until I could make that purchase. I'd certainly encourage your friend to contact Logos sales directly and explain the situation and see what their best pricing might be. She can do that via phone but also by email: sales@logos.com

And of course, you're not compelled to buy a package. I've been a Logos user for 8 years, and still don't have one, but have near 1000 resources.

Some folks in another thread mentioned an "Bible Essentials" Package by a third party that might be helpful in terms of a price-content relation and bible study resources. Logos currently doesn't sell it, but anybody should find it on the web. That's just hearsay, I don't have this package myself, but when I went over its contents listing, I thought that this could easily work as a starter for bible study, to be completed with other logos resources as interest, need and budget go.

I think she should make a list of what resources she needs for her ministry and look where to obtain these. Phd in OT - I wonder how someone does this without a bible software package such as Logos. But the point really is, what does she need in Logos - and for Original Languages, I think the base package or SESB are the only sets of resources that bring some value, and individual resources (such as HALOT) might be rather expensive.

That is a product by Nelson and is not sold through Logos. It is an excellent way to pick up a few good resources and a bunch of others that unfortunately someone with an academic background would not probably not be interested in. None-the-less for laypeople it is a great addition. It has gone by a number of names, but I think Essential Bible Study Library is one you can find it under and it is less than $20.00. Note that this is shipping with the older Logos 3/Libronix engine. The resources will work with the free Logos 4 engine as well.

Thanks all. Price comparisons between packages and individual books have definitely been done and it is cheaper to buy them individually.

The crossgrade comments were really useful.

In answer to how do you do a PhD without Logos, as a current student I can say for a PhD it helps to have bible manipulation software but Logos used not to be very good at that so we all have specialist programmes such Bibleworks, gramcord etc. Logos is getting better but I'm still not sure I can do all I can in Gramcord and certainly not half as easily. I can never work out how to do the complex grammar searches I want. Logos is great for its library but when you are a poor student with no money at a University with a good library then one reads real books still.

Calling Logos from the UK is not as expensive as you might expect. Use the discounted number 0871 218 1700. As a long-distance caller, you also usually jump the queue and are put through to the next available person.

Logos is great for its library but when you are a poor student with no money at a University with a good library then one reads real books still.

There is a certain limit beyond which you cannot stretch your budget,but I will remind you of Erasmus' words that when he has a little money he buys books. Certain things are a priority so that the first thing is to set your priority.

For, full disclosure I do not license a Logos base package(at least not yet), rather I went with the SESB 3.0 and then started to add on a collection of other logos modules(that I needed or wanted). If you are also an owner of the SESB then you might wait for the SESB upgrade to logos version 4 (link) which is coming out this November. Anyway, the great thing about Logos is that you need not waste money on anything you do not need.

About Gramcord:

Did you know that the NA27 in Libronix/SESB and Logos normal NA27 have Gramcord morphological tagging? Also, the search engines that Libronix3/and Logos4 use (like Emdros) are more advanced than the Bible Companion Software engine of Gramcord. Having said that I am a also a user of one of the specialist programs you mentioned and using Logos has been a big paradigm shift for me, too.

I would advise you to use the forums more and ask how to execute those more challenging queries of yours.

Just out of curiosity what can Gramcord do, that Logos can't?

Or ask Logos to call you. They're usually quite happy to do that for a sale.
