Anchor Yale Dictionary - sale

Has the Anchor Dictionary been on sale as of late --- can we expect it to, or should one wait for something else to come on sale and forget this one?

I don't recall this being on sale ever. Maybe, but certainly not often. This is one of those resources Logos may not have the exclusive right to distribute so you might check around to see if it is available elsewhere for a better price. I don't know.
As for something else, there is nothing else of the AYBD quality in Logos among Bible dictionaries. If you mean something else to spend $200 on then I'd say wait for a sale.

Thanks Mark & fgh for the replies. Fgh, you say you bought it on sale in December - do you mind torturing me a bit by letting me know what the sale price was back then? And I'm taking it was on sale from Logos. Am I correct? And why am I thinking that Mark is closer to the truth than not on this - *wait for a sale* - or in this case, *another sale* ... :-)

I bought it on sale, but that was in the last century (seriously).

It's still cheaper than the New Interpreter's Dictionary. Personally I plan on owning both at some point in Logos (I have NID hardback now and love it, but would MUCH rather it be available on Logos).

Wow back in the 20th C. and in 2010. Pretty infrequently.

I believe the public sale price on the Home Page was $199.95. My sales rep only charged me $189.95, possibly because I upgraded at the same time.

Of course, you need to realize that back then they didn't have nearly as much to sell as now. If they wanted to have a sale they almost had to include it.

It was also on sale for $189.95 during the 12 Days 2009: http://blog.logos.com/2009/12/12_days_of_logos_sale_extended/

That's for sure. I got mine on August 27, 2002. I paid $229.46 and consider it money very well spent.

I recommend that you call a sales rep, they can give the best prices. If you are a student in Bible college or seminary, you may qualify for further discounts.

This is one of those titles that rarely has a sale and when it does the window of opportunity closes quickly. I bought this from another user for what I thought was a steal (I think it was around $175. The week I registered it in my account Logos put it on sale for around $20 higher. I prefer to buy directly from Logos due to the added benefits. I think it was around May of 2008. I have not noticed it on sale since I got it, so if December 2010 was the next sale it was a 30 month wait and you will have 2 more years till it goes on sale again.[:S] Like Mark says, "It was $ well-spent."
fwiw: The resource used to be called Anchor Bible Dictionary. The "Yale" part came into play just a few years ago. It has been published for PC and for Mac platforms (separately) and by Libronix, Oak Tree and possibly others. The most interesting thing I discovered is the number of seminaries and universities that have it in their libraries. I did not think Libronix offered any institutional licensing. But that did not stop the schools from buying the Libronix version and allowing use by a single user at a time on library workstations.

Interesting, but not surprising. I think it is one of the most valuable resources Logos has (and there are a lot of good ones).

So, would you folks recommend the Anchor Yale Dictionary over the New Interpreters Dictionary?

Yes, absolutely on the Anchor Yale Dictionary! IMHO they are not in the same league in terms of depth of coverage and scholarship.

Get Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary first. (Better & cheaper.)
Then when you have the extra money buy New Interpreter's.
Like Ted just said: Anchor is in a league of it's own.

I don't have the NIDB, but I would like to make a comment on purchasing the AYBD, not to disparage the NIBD. My advice on BDAG has consistently been "Go, sell your first-born child and buy BDAG." My advice on the AYBD is "Take out a second mortgage on your house and buy it."

Well that takes care of the NIDB. Nothing left to sell or borrow against.

Thanks for the suggestion George - I'm not so sure about re-mortgaging the house, but Air Miles could be a motivation.
