Keeping to computers in Sync, and one Resource location NOT in C:

Hi there

I have already installed my new Logos 4 Scholars to two computers. Desktop, and laptop.

Desktop had Libronix 3 installed, so I was able to set a resources location to a storage drive (N:). My library, after updating to Logos 4, still appears to be updating via N.

The N: drive is synchronised daily (Allwaysync) between my two machines to keep them, well, synced! I have two questions.

1. Now that I have installed L4 to a laptop today, how can I get it to point to the N drive resources which are already on my machine (this has been standard practice for years with music software with large library content - and quite frankly should be a pre-requisite for any software requiring anything over a GB of 'non program' storage.)

2. Will the Logos library cope with being synchronised by a third party application? (ie could there be 'indexing problems - ie, do I need to maintain two (!) library locations. This would NOT be a good option!)

Apologies - just a newby with expectations of a quality product operating like quality software should...

I am not sure about how L4 will do being synced with a 3rd party app. Maybe someone else has expereince with that. My question would be why would you need to? The sync that L4 has built in should keep L4 updated on both machines assuming you have internet checked yes in the program settings.

Kent, it surprises me that Logos 4 would find your resources on a drive other than the installed drive. Have you checked the install drive to see if the resources are also there? The location (Vista and W7) is: C:\Users\(user name)\AppData\Local\Logos4\Data\(random string)\ResourceManager\Resources

I believe the reason for the restriction on where resources are located has to do with simplifying Tech Support and programming the 'cloud' to know where to download resources and updates to, but I may be off on this.

I can't answer the synch question. My guess is that every time you start up Logos it will check to see if there are new resources and will attempt to index them. But again, I could be wrong. Logos by itself is designed to keep your two installations in synch (if we play by their rules).

Can't speak directly to the past but HDs are so large now and so cheap that I can understand a decision to not be concerned with a dozen or so GB of non-program data.

HI Fred. It comes down to storage. I'm simply trying to keep 6GB out of my system partition which is getting pretty tight. N is my storage partition - and has plenty of space. Either way, its only 6GB per computer, which isn't a massive ask, but it would be nice to have them in one location.

The N gets synchronized, which raises the question about resource location/handling.

Your suprise is justified - it seems the logos library I have on my 'N' is an older, smaller library, Libronix I assume, and that L4 is using the appdata location you listed. Looks like I'm just going to have to run with the specification of a 'C drive' library (or libraryies)

While in one sense, you are right about drives being cheap (I got an external 2 TB recently for US$120) but, while my computers are top end machines, the desktop is 2 years old, and the laptop is an i7 less than a year old, the drive sizes are "only" in the 320-500GB range, and then the system partitions are still only about 120-150 GB. I'm a pretty heavy software user, so, it might be very well to let one application throw its weight around with 6-10GB, but if you have ten bits of software doing that... and then if you're down to your last 15GB of C...

You see my issue.

Anyway, I'll just have to see if I can stretch-and-grow my partitions to create a bit more breathing space.

The Logos Software, however, looks great... especially the visual tools which I really appreciate...I just need to change my settings so I'm not being 'given the opportunity' to buy another book every 10 seconds...

Nothing special. It is actually on the top of the form when you hit Reply. Highlight what you want to quote and hit Quote. Simple. If you hit Quick Reply you don't have the option.

Yep and that can fill up faster than one thinks. I am fortunate to own a new laptop with two 640 GB drives. Prior to that I had one with two 250 GB drives and one was full and the other was getting pretty full. And I probably don't use my computer as you do.

As I pointed out in another thread you posted on tonight you can create a junction point and Windows will 'fool' Logos into thinking your resources are on your install drive. That may be a way around for you. I still don't know if that plus your extra software will allow you to synch between computers without confusing Logos.

Libronix and Logos 4 are independent applications so do not attempt to share/sync their resources. Where necessary, Logos 4 will copy resources from a working Libronix installation on the same machine, but prefers to have them in the new format (*.logos4).

You can select a custom installation to store all L4 files on the N: drive. Use Method 2 which is a quick way to reinstall L4 ie. backup the \logos4 folder, uninstall L4, delete what remains of the Logos4 folder in system partition, then install to N: using Method 2.

Note that you can adapt Method 2 to sync Logos 4 installations, using one as the Master for all downloads and indexing.

Observation: Logos 4 has many SQLite database files along with resource files. Logos 4 Indexer discovers resources previously downloaded by Logos 4 or scan command, then moves (download) or copies (scan) resource files into Resource folder along with updating several database files. SQLite is designed for single user; can search internet for sqlite database files multiple users

In contrast, Libronix 3 always scanned Resources folder when starting so syncing resource files between multiple installations was no problem.
