Logos 4.0 Media only DVD for "just in case"

I installed most of my Version 3 from DVD and CDs It took a while with all the "insert disc again" steps. I found downloading the files much faster. But when you pay over a thousand dollars it is nice to have something to hold in your hand during a power failure. Idea

I ordered a Logos 4 upgrade package by download. Is it possible to get the "media only" DVD? My persuasive argument would be "We do not know what the future holds in regards to internet access and taxation policies. Or perhaps rolling blackouts through the power grid could be the norm. It would be of some comfort to know I could do a re-install with the DVD if neccessary."

Now here is the real reason: I like the classy persoalized leather portfolio packaging! Had I read the sales pitch page instead of studying the contents page I would have ordered the DVD in the neat packaging. Is there any way a user can get it after the order has been processed as a download? Then my wife can hold the portfolio and know what a great value the upgrade is! (This is a serious inquiry,Logos. Pretty please? I'll wait three weeks to get it.)

Matthew I would perhaps suggest that some time in the future DVD will be no more either. Nothing is certain in this world in terms of technology. Logso have written this to help them future proof but how long before a total re-write will be necessary? It was 10 yrs this time, it maight be 5 yrs next time.

Hmm. Perhaps Logos can send out the packaging for you to hold for the cost of the packing + postage then you can store your old Logos 3 in it [:D]

I agree. I'm planning to upgrade with the download option since I'm currently in a location where mail is monitored and a Bible software DVD would not attract good attention. I want a media only DVD so that I could install from a clean slate at any time without being connected to the internet if my current internet security measures stop working for me.

DOS still does what it always did. [au] My 1974 Mercury still gets 8 miles per gallon. My cassette deck still eats tapes.

I know it sounds about as silly as buying an expensive coffin but undertakers sell a lot of them. The price for the upgrade is the same for download or portfolio. I figure they rolled the costs into that price.

Whenever I see people asking this type of question about the reliabiltiy of the "cloud" and the "over the internet" type of downloading I just wonder....why not back up your resources for yourself?

I did that on V3 and I've now done that on v4.

for a small price for the imaging software you can back up an image of your whole c drive and roll back to a good install with all of the goodies whenever you want. I use Acronis Personal.

I'm really not worried about my software as long as Logos is headed up by the current leadership. I really DO want the personalized leather portfolio. I grew up in Japan where they often spend more effort on the packaging than the contents. Call me stupid , or whatever. Just send me the nice portfolio. Nobody will cherish it more than I will. [8]

I believe that once you are "downloaded fully" you can run "off the grid" so if that's the case...then backing up and reinstalling via an image is EXACTLY as if you had never reinstalled...right?

Bryan are you referring to theDVD installation? I think that once Logos has installed off the DVD it is pretty much in the "good to go" category but it will need to update to Logos at some point for registering I think? Any other ideas from others?

Have you seen the prices for a Portfolio upgrade? I think it can bear a "freebie." Not that I don't appreciate the wonderful value. But it is the world's best Bible software in form & function by far. It deserves a nice ;leather folder. They probably already have them on order.

An internet connection is required for licence download, although you can request an offline installation if necessary (not tested!).

Local backup & restore is not provided. You can request a copy of your licence, though (being tested!).

(I know it's impolite to reply to one's own post but..........) They have already changed the product description by removing the "personalized leather portfolio" from the description. I guess the order didn't come in.

You remember how that alert user got in on the super cheap pre-pub because he was paying attention? Well, I saw Logos 4 at 12:20 last night and posted my discovery on this forum and facebook. I also found the (now missing) "personalized, leather portfolio." (I would settle for one of the samples that is lying around HQ. [8-|])

( I just may disappear from the forums when that huge download finally gets indexed. This Logos 4 release is almost as exciting as having baby #13, almost.)

I did not realize there was an option to restore licenses from a backup or a file provided by Logos. That's good to hear if it's true.

This is a question which was posed again and again in Beta testing. We will definitely have access, upon request, to a license key for a re-install. All that will be required is an email request for such a key.

The CS Rep was very friendly and helpful. She made a note of my request and said it shoulnd't be a problem.

But, here is the bad news: The media disc only contains the small setup program for Logos 4. The resources MUST be downloaded from the Logos server. Although it doesn't make sense to me, that is what she explained. So I guess having the instal media is of little use except to have the neat folder. I requested the folder anyway. [:P]

I have broadband, that's ok. But tons of Logos users don't. I know a few myself who are still on dialup. Can you imagine a 9.6GB download on dialup? They'll still be downloading when L5 is released.

I'm sure the rep just didn't know that an actual media DVD is in the works. At least, I sure hope one is.

As of this morning, the disc for Portfolio hadn't been produced--but there is now a (single layer DVD) disc that contains all the resources in Portfolio that are not already in Platinum. (Perhaps that was the source of the confusion?)

The "main" Logos 4 disc (dual layer DVD, which contains all the resources included in Platinum) should also be a part of the Portfolio package.

Hope I can get a hold of the DVD + the leather portfolio after buying as a download edition, seriouosly I can't see anyone waiting for the download to be complete in 12 hours, then have wait for another 8 hours for the indexing. DVD will definitely save the 12 hours on download.

No Steven. I will be patient since they must be swamped at HQ. The theory was to get away from hard media installations. And if they actually personalize it with your name it will be delayed a little more.

I was very blessed to have a flawless download and indexing. Several times I thought it had frozen because it took so long. (11 hours download & about 8 more indexing 11.7 GB. With a second download of 577mb.) But I had none of the problems I have read others encountering. So I KNOW the download install process can work. As long as you have a fast connection and don't have to pay by the minute. But I still want the nice portfolio & discs!

I am with you Matt!!! Spend like a day of downloading the index, but I have to say my hardware might not be able to keep up with the new engine, Logos 4 seems to be slower than Logos 3 on my laptop.... Maybe time for me to spend some money to get a new Laptop or MacBookPro

"classy personalized leather portfolio packaging"? I upgraded to Portfolio on day one, but I didn't really expect that I would receive a portfolio...it just seemed like a name. Still, about a week later I received a package containing a portfolio with three discs and a copy of the recent Bible Study magazine (still haven't looked at it). But "classy"? "Leather"? Think again. What I got was a plasticized rip-stop type covering by a company called Brenthaven. Nothing about it indicates a relationship with Logos. And I can't fathom what its purpose is...though it does have a pen sleeve. There is a blue Bic pen (I never write in blue) with a Logos logo. If there is a classy leather porffolio, I might be interested, but this is just a glorified paper pad cover (pad not included).

Steven, I guess you will have to call a human at Customer Service or Sales and request it. Don't expect more than a Media Only package. David Paul's post takes away the excitement. When looking at the description page, it appears the mention of a real portfolio has been deleted. Will I have to settle for a plastic folder with a pen? I guess I can have my name embossed by the local Bible store. [:)]
