4.3 Beta 5 BUG Extremely slow, almost unresponsive

Hi
After upgrading to Beta 5, I am finding Logos very unresponsive and impossible to use. There is no crash, but my logs are attached anyway.

I have switched GPU's to my faster discreet GPU, which has improved the performance, but is still very much slower than Beta 4.

Is it still running slower? Is the Indexer running?
0 -
Yes, still slower. The indexer is not running. I keep seeing the "Wheel of Death". At best it takes 10 seconds to respond to a click and some things don't happen at all, causing the program to be "not responding"
The performance of Beta 4 was fine.
Latest logs attached (as the program was not responding). 2543.Logging.zip
Thanks

Hi
Just realised that logging is now switched off by default, so my previous logs will be empty. I have now followed your instructions, Melissa, to activate logging again and have attached some new logs where I was trying to open a new note file, which was very frustratingly slow.
Thanks

So far, beta 5 has been pretty responsive for me, some parts seeming to be a bit more responsive than previous versions.

Below is the data at the end of the log beginning with the command opening a new Notes document. Did you send the log before the document panel opened? Did you have to Force Quit?

The note panel opened and I typed in a title. There was a lag of some 10 seconds before the characters appeared. I didn't force quit, in fact it is still open now. I then archived the logs.
Bit of a puzzle!

I noticed that the fans on my MacBook Pro seem to be busy, so I launched Activity Monitor to see what was happening. It seems that Logos is using up a lot of resources. See image from activity monitor below:

Me too - I have been patiently letting it do its stuff since last night, throughout the night and up till now, without any sign of it giving up.
Fans run, go fast then die back. The little menu icon was not displayed to indicate an index running. The Activity Monitor only shows Logos once.
Perhaps I ought to abandon it and get some more work done?

Have you tried the troubleshooting steps in this public wiki page: http://wiki.logos.com/Mac_Troubleshooting#Slow_Performance?

Thanks Melissa.
I have tried booting into 64bit Kernel, but no change. Indexer is not running so that is not the problem. My indexing seems to run quite fast. I don't use a time machine backup.
I don't really see why it will be necessary to change any program settings as Beta 4 was absolutely fine, and the only thing I have done is upgrade to Beta 5.
I don't really want to have to play with font smoothing, again, for the reasons above.
My Mac is pretty lightening fast normally. It is a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory, 6MB Ls Cache, 1.07 GHz Bus Speed, 500GB Hard disk, rotation speed 7200, Link speed and Negotiated Link Speed both 3 Gigabit. I have 2 graphics cards and am using NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
I don't want you to think this is just a problem with the speed of my machine. When I have Logos open, my computer get so hot I can hardly touch it. As soon I close Logos, the fans start to slow down and eventually it all cools down and goes silent again.
The last time I have a problem like this was during the Alpha testing phase when there were some memory leaks in Logos. Could this be a memory leak?
Thanks for your help.

When Logos 4 opens, does it open to a layout or to the home page? Does the layout or home page load more slowly than in Beta 4? With every panel closed, open your preferred Bible--does it open or navigate more slowly? Besides Notes, in what other features/panels do you see the performance hit?

No, I was opening to straight to a layout

Similar opening times

Opening my preferred bible with no other tabs or windows opens fine and the speed is fine. Fans are fine as well. Could this be a problem with my layout I was using? I will try rebuilding my layout from scratch. Thanks for your help.
"Keep Smiling" - I have now updated to 10.6.7 thanks, but the problem remains, but a good spot - thanks.

Well, I took the bull by the horns and quit the app.
I re-loaded it straight away last night. All appeared normal.
Then I was alerted to a download ... of 1K! (this might have been the NLT update I noted on the Home page?) I installed and re-launched in the normal fashion once I was alerted it was ready.
The indexer appeared as it should, and an index proceeded for quite a while, but in the background with normal behaviour.
I have now quit and reloaded. All is normal - except ... it is running faster!
Hope that helps in some way.

I can confirm that it must have been a problem with the layout I was using, as I have rebuilt it and performance is now fine. Thanks Melissa for your patience and help.[:)]

I hate to say this, but I am having the same problem again. It seems to happen when I load a layout, even the one I have rebuilt is now very unusably slow. A work round is a build a layout every time, but that is far from ideal. Could it be a problem with my layout.db? is it a bug that will be sorted in the next release. I can put up with it until the next release if that is the case.
I can't seem to attach my layout.db. It is 2.5MB. Is this normal?
Thanks

Wondering about a screenshot of slow layout ?
Also wondering what is unusably slow; please elaborate (so others can try to replicate).
Idea: keep Logging folder open. If Logos4_Crash.txt file is updated, please close Logos 4 Mac, compress folder, and reply (attaching archive).
While replicating an issue => Crash when doing Word Study , noticed Logos4_Crash.txt file updated and Logos 4 Mac became unresponsive.
Curious about system memory usage (especially Page Outs).

Wondering about a screenshot of slow layout ?
Here is a screen shot of a layout. This is the one that I rebuilt (re: post above). For some reason there is an arrow tab on the left pane that keeps flickering all the tabs in that pain slightly to the right, and then back again, making clicking on these tabs difficult. This has only just started to happen.
Also wondering what is unusably slow; please elaborate (so others can try to replicate).
To answer this, everything is slow. For example: In the bottom right pane. Selecting the ESV tab will take 10 seconds for the ESV to show up (this is usually almost instantaneous)
Typing anything in the notes will take 10 seconds or so to register and then a 3 - 5 second lag in typing a letter until it shows on the screen.
Here is a screen shot of my cpu usage and memory usage.
Idea: keep Logging folder open. If Logos4_Crash.txt file is updated, please close Logos 4 Mac, compress folder, and reply (attaching archive).
I will try this, although the program is not actually crashing. When it does I will post the logs.
Thanks for your help
