Enabling Logging

Is it true then, that the only way one can permanently enable logging is to go into the Windows Registry? According to what is written on this page -

Also, I'm finding it a *bit* confusing as to what three lines I'm to copy where ----

Is it these ---

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Logos4\Logging]
"Enabled"=dword:00000001

Of course, this one seems to make no sense whereas the HKey_Current User ... is the directory.

Or is it these ---

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Logos4\Logging]
"Enabled"=dword:00000001

Save as “EnableLogging.reg”

If there is a more simple way to enable logging, please advise, for this surely isn't a simple way or explanation from my standpoint. Thanks in advance for the help.

If someone is literate in running a command line that executes a javascript, the attached zip file has the files necessary to enable and disable logging permanently (until the command is run again), depending on which you run. Unzip them all into a folder, then double-click on the enablelogging.cmd file (note - the CMD file) to enable, double click on disablelogging.cmd file to disable logging. Effect takes place the next time you start Logos 4.

You can't hurt anything by double clicking on the wrong thing by mistake

These are all text files, in case you fear any viruses. You can open them up in Notepad and view them (all 4 files)

This uses a program WSCRIPT, Windows Scripting Tool, which is standard with Windows 7 and Vista, not sure about XP but I am pretty sure it's included there too.

That all said, this still makes mods to the registry, as that is how Logos 4 checks to see whether to enable or disable logging. So this may not be for the faint of heart.

Bookjack, you don't put these lines in the registry. You put them in a text file and change the extension to .reg. Then when you run that file the proper command is incorporated into the registry, no need to manually edit a registry key.

Honestly - I'm not really following this. I've copied these files into Wordpad -------

"Windows Registry
Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Logos4\Logging]

I've saved it as ENABLELOGGING.REG

I close it - when I double click on that file, all it does is open it up in either Wordpad or Word. I've read and re-read the instructions on the Logos site, but as far as I know, it isn't working.

You can all put this one on ignore, or if someone has extended patience, let more info fly this way.

Unzip the file and double click on it. If it doesn't work then you probably have some file association issues. We can work through those, but first I'll need to know what OS you're using.

Ok, Run Logos, close it. Navigate to Documents and look for a folder titled "Logos Log Files," open it and look for a Logos4Log.txt, check the time stamp if its a few minutes ago (from when you closed Logos) you know that logging is enabled.

Keep in mind that this file will get overwrote every time you start Logos so if you have a crash make certain to save a copy to upload to the forum before restarting.

Yup (Yuppier in French) --- this did the trick. In that folder, I see a file called "Logos4indexercrash" dated the 8th of April of 2011. Also, above that is one called "Logos4crash" dated also the 8th of April 2011. The first was listed at 11.00PM - the second at 11.08PM.

Where did these come from - if this supposedly wasn't logging anything? Apparently it was at that moment? How do you explain that?

If Logos crashes it is supposed to create these crash dumps which reveal the particular error that made Logos crash. Sometimes this is enough to diagnose a problem and fix it but other times the full log is helpful to see what was happening leading up to and creating the conditions for the crash.
