Buy Back Program

I was thinking about "What if Logos had a buy back program for resources?" or a "Trade in your old resource (s) for a new one?"

Wouldn't it be great to be able to return resources that you've purchased and that you don't really use and exchange them for resources that you will actually use and need? Of course, this wouldn't apply to the resources included in your original and latest base package, only to those resources which you've purchased from Logos aside from your base package.

For example, what if someone purchased the WBC and kept the series for a year, but then they decide that they just got it on impulse and that the series was too advanced for them, wouldn't it be nice to be able to exchange it for, let's say, the "Exegetical Commentary Bundle" which is less technical and more practical? Of course, there should/could be a percentage deducted from the price you paid as a penalty for returning and exchanging.

Anyway, just a thought. Personally, I'm saving my pennies for Christmas and hopefully the "Exegetical Commentary Bundle" will be on sale. I know that if the right sale price comes along, I will also get the WBC because both sets are great and I would love to have them all. But I think I would buy NICOT/NICNT instead of those two if I had the money to do so [Maybe it's time to start saving...lol]. Alright, feel free to post your comments if you like.

Okay, let's grant your wish, with the condition that you now own Logos Bible Software.

You have expended much time, energy, and money to provide the finest Bible product in the land. You hire top employees and pay them well for their work. You sell it at a reasonable price, and make little profit.

So you sell a scholarly book to a Bible student in the hope that s/he will get much good out of it.

A year later the customer wants to return it, and apply the full refund toward the purchase of a different product that you have spent much to provide.

I think you read too much into the op's post. He never implied a return would be for full price. In fact, he says:

Are you saying if a customer wanted to sell it back to Logos for 5% of the original cost and thereby foregoing any future rights to view that material, it would be unrealistic? How about 1%? Nobody complains about stores like "half priced books" which basically do the same thing. We can, of course, argue over what the most fair % should be, but the idea itself is not necessarily bad.

Here's a different twist on it. What if there was a used Logos marketplace where instead of being able to return your unused resources to Logos for a flat %/$ anytime you wanted and Logos has to eat it, instead you use the marketplace to find a different user who is interested in the product and would like to buy it off of you. You deactivate your copy and have them activate on their computer. And perhaps Logos gets a cut of the transaction to keep it fair. What do you think their profit margin is on each product sale? 15%? 30%? Amazon's used book marketplace charges those kinds of fees as it is and nobody complains.

Thanks for your post, but like Rev Chris said, you read too much into the post. But thanks for the comment though. I like the twist Chris added too, there's so many ways to go about it. The idea just came to me right after I watch the Best Buy "Buy Back" program, so I thought maybe this or something similar could be brought over to Logos but only to those resources that you've purchased from Logos and aside from your original/current base package.

Now, to answer your question: Would I go for the model YOU proposed? No, I wouldn't. It wouldn't be fair to Logos or the publishers.

Actually this does happen. For $20 Logos will usually transfer a license for a product. Of course, products bought as part of basic package aren't allowed unless you transfer the whole package.

This often happens when people trade / sell logos products no longer available.

I thought this might be the case ... although a marketplace website would be an interesting experiment. Also I would think a better model would be to charge a % of the price rather than a flat $20. For instance, the Interpretation commentary I just bought for $700 probably has more than a $20 profit margin for Logos - and the now full price of $800 certainly does. So for someone to buy it off of me and Logos to only make $20 would seem unfair. Similarly there are some really cheap resources ($20 or less) that nobody in their right mind would ever sell to another user since it would be cheaper for the other person to just buy it directly from Logos.

Logos initially did charge a percentage transfer fee and at the pleas of its customers they changed it to a flat fee. I had to post this to remind people just how great this company is. I have been reading much criticism of Logos in another thread and this just brought to mind one of the many "ethical" ways Logos does business.

Actually, the one-time $20 fee does not represent profit, but is to cover the administrative cost of making the transfer.
