High CPU

When I open up the exegetical guide and enter Heb 1:9 for example it will peg one of my CPU's to 100% for several minutes the the application will be unresponsive. This is a 4 core system and even though the other CPU's are idle the only way I can use the application is to force it to quit.

This is very frustrating as the exegetical guide is a function I really want to use. This seems like a significant flaw in the application. I do not understand

How can I troubleshoot this problem?

Which version of L4 Mac are you using? I have 4.3 Beta 5 on a quad-core Mac Pro.

Sorry, I cannot duplicate your problem. One core reached around 80% briefly, but the overall response was rather quick. What sections do you have expanded? I only have Word-by-Word opened when I first access the Exegetical Guide. It is best to collapse all sections of any Guide except the one you are using at the time. The more sections you have expanded, the harder L4 must work to populate them.

I am on the stable version and cannot reproduce your problem using the standard EG with Heb 1.9 as a reference. I have a late 2008 MBP with only 1 dual core and 4 gigs of memory. What else do you have running on your computer? Perhaps a conflict of some sort with another program?

I am running the latest stable version Logos 4 4.2b SR-1 (4.22.5.1109), no beta versions

Nothing else is running on my computer.

1. Start Logos

2. Select Exegetical Guide

3. Select Heb 9:1-10

4. CPU then runs high for several minutes

After several minutes it finally stops.

Then, if I select another passage Matt 1:1-10 , the cycle repeats eventually becoming responsive.

During the cycle there is continual Disk Activity around three megabytes a second.

The only section open is the Word by Word Section

I also note that after everything is settled down that the application does all its computations when I scroll through the list the CPU starts computing again. The screen scrolling is uneven and choppy.

I have a ATI 5770 Graphic card with 1 gig of Ram.

Why is the CPU working for simple scrolling of the results menu in the Exegesis Guide with only Word by Word open?

Larry, in your initial post, you only selected a single verse. In that I could not duplicate your experience. However in your last two examples, you have chosen 10 verses. That is a lot of words that involves a great deal of computing cycles. It will take a long time to generate that entire report. Could I suggest that you use smaller selections?

It's still interesting to me how much CPU is used just scrolling through the list.

It must be how the interface is built. It probably does some type of update/check as I scroll as opposed to just reading a video buffer from the generated data built

Apologies, unable to replicate Heb 1:9 Word by Word for minutes, currently running 32 bit kernel for VMWare Fusion 2 compatibility.

Wiki page Mac Troubleshooting => Slow Performance section has many entries, wondering about Font conflicts since scrolling also involves displaying Fonts.

Another option is while Logos 4 Mac is busy doing Word by Word: use Activity Monitor to sample process, then compress samples, followed by reply with archive attached or email Mac Support => macsupport@logos.com (could reference this thread)

I just tried the Hebrews 9:1-10 on my quad core mbp and it took a long time with one thread maxed out. I'm not sure why Logos is only using 12% of the cpu with such a cpu intensive task.

Likewise noticed Logos 4.2b SR-1 showing 100 % CPU usage doing Word by Word for Hebrews 9:1-10, yet CPU History graph on Quad Core i7 shows task bouncing among 4 cores (any 1 core seldom about 67 % used).

With hyper-threading enabled, a Quad Core i7 appears to have 8 CPU's so one process running at 100 % is using 12.5 % of overall CPU capacity.

An Exegetical Guide Word by Word section has lots of screen updates as section populates.

By the way, instead of sluggish Word by Word report in New Testament, personally prefer Greek interlinear: display manuscript and Louw-Nida # so hovering on Louw-Nida # shows contextual range of word meaning in a pop-up (can right click on word for many Word by Word items).

I reran this query with an 120 Gig OWC 3G SSD as my boot drive to see what improvments might be had and eliminate any possible disk I/O bottleneck.

So bascially I have the best hardware you could possible use and still Logos 4 is severly handicapped in using the power.

I have instant Disk access, huge RAM and plenty of cores, yet Logos barley taps into the CPU power. It feeds about 25% of each Core or 12.5 % of available threads.

This tells me the software not only does not use all the cores effectivly by does not even drive the 4 cores it can use.

Which leads me to a question? Where is the bottleneck now?

My next question is this - Does the Logos 4 application utilize " Grand Central Dispatch" API's availible in OS X for scheduling threads? If it did or could there would be much high utilization of the cores across the hardware. I'm speculating here.

Observation: when running Passage Guide with many sections, have noticed several sections busy at same time, then whole section displays.

Wonder about adding 7 Word by Word sections for custom Exegetical Guide use ? (populate in parallel)

Word by Word: Verbs

Word by Word: Nouns

Word by Word: Adjectives

Word by Word: Adverbs

Word by Word: Pronouns

Word by Word: Prepositions

Word by Word: Conjunctions

The settings for new "Word by Word: *****" sections could have choice to show all words (for that part of speech) or lemma's that occur ## times or fewer. The original "Word by Word" section would stay the same (new sections essentially duplicate Word by Word for a part of speech that would allow sections to populate in parallel).

I'm really hoping that we see an update that allows Logos 4 to use a lot more of the available cpu power. It' really frustrating because I was told that L4 would use all cores/threads when I was deciding on which laptop to buy. I'm still amazed that scrolling in text windows is choppy on a quad core, 8GB 1600MHz Ram, Sata 3 SSD, 1GB dedicated GPU machine.

From observing section population in Passage Guide and Exegetical Guide, suspect each section has one thread for display. The Exegetical Guide Word by Word section displays each word in sequence; thought about idea of several Word by Word sections (for different parts of speech), which would allow parts of speech to be processed in parallel (using up to one CPU for each part of speech). On a Mac with 8 CPU's, processing 7 parts of speech in parallel should cause CPU usage to be much higher than 12.5 % plus quicker display of Word by Word sections.

For study, grouping parts of speech could be insightful (a bit different way to look at a passage).
