1) Let's say I type in a verse i.e. James 2:2 in what I'll call the passage guide (right below the Logos Bible Software logo) - what I find is the verse I type in very seldom comes up but the verse next to it, usually the preceding one. Is this normal or is there a way to fix that?

2) Also, while hovering the mouse over a verse, it will come up in the Bible I've set for my default (KJV 1900) - is there a way to have another translation brought up in the popup?

Do you have any resources "linked"? If so, a simple adjustment of a window can change the passage and/or exegetical guide... That is the only way I was able to recreate your issue.

The "window" that you can type in which is below and to the left of the Logos Bible software logo is called the command box. You can type all kinds of commands from there. If I set the KJV 1900 as my default Bible and enter James 2:2 in the box I get exactly what you get. Especially it is noticeable if you have Bible Text Only checked in the visual filter (the three interconnecting rings). I suspect this is more noticeable because the KJV 1900 is in paragraph form rather than verse by verse like the NAS for example. But even the NAS does this if you have Bible Text Only checked. As far as I know there isn't anything we can do to change that behavior. I believe it is by design so that the verse you want is "out in the open".

You could, if you wanted, set some other translation to the default so that it shows in the popups and then keep the KJV 1900 open with send hyperlinks here set so that Bible links are sent to it rather than the other translation.

(Off Topic: I used to work with a guy who went to the carpenter shop in the factory where we worked and would make several bootjacks to give away as presents. His family enjoyed riding and raising horses and therefore wore boots.)

While hovering over the verse/reference hit F7. This will display your top 4 or 5 translations in a pop-up window.

You're talking about what some people call the "Go box" on the Home Page, right?

Typing a Bible reference into that box will open up a Layout with a
Passage Guide, Exegetical Guide, and a bunch of other windows. Are you
saying that it nearly always opens these things up to the verse before the one you typed in (in particular with James 2:2?)

That would be odd, and I must say I'm not seeing it. Can you show us a screenshot of what you're talking about? See http://wiki.logos.com/Screenshot for how to capture and post a screenshot.

Hmm, it sounds like either your Bible index is off and needs to be rebuilt (type rebuild index
into the command bar), or maybe you're using a Bible version that has a
different verse mapping. Martha (MJ Smith) might be able to help figure out if
the latter might be the case and could be causing the behavior you're
seeing. But in the meantime I'd try rebuilding your index and see if that fixes it.

Appears NASB 1995 Bible positions text so Matthew 24:6 does not have any preceding words (6 other Bibles have something in front of reference):

Note: started with "Go" button, then closed other panels (kept commentary that opened OK), rearranged Bibles (then added some more).

Verse positioning also happens with link set movement, desired verse is somewhere within tab: may or may not be top line.

I'm still trying to reproduce this on my setup. I'm running Windows 7 too. I've got Logos 4.3 Beta 6. I've tried to match your prioritizations to get the same windows opening up in my layout as yours (at least the top prioritized Bible and commentary). It looks as though your program scaling in Logos is set to a large value or else you've got a smaller screen resolution than I have, because I had to set my program scaling to 160% to approximate the small amount of space you have available for text in the KJV 1900 window. Nonetheless, it only gets the verse wrong immediately after I resize the screen resolution. Next time I redo the lookup of Mt 24:6 from the home page, it displays the correct verse:

I would try playing around with different program scalings and screen resolutions and see if you can narrow down what the culprit is so that other people can reproduce the problem on their machines. I don't see how Logos Development will be able to help with this unless they know what is the key that's unique to your setup that makes it happen there but not on our machines.

As stated earlier, it appears only the KJV presents this unique problem. I've set the ESV as the default translation and each verse will come up right on every time. Also (forgive the repetition) but certain books in the KJV will come up accurate each time - other books i.e. John & James get their back up and simply will not play by the rules.

As to the screen resolution, I'm playing with a 17.3 inch laptop screen, so there's not a whole lot of play I can do without driving other programs into a frenzy.

Maybe you can clarify "scaling" - but the question does remains as to why the KJV seemingly is the only translation that gives me this grief.

Program Scaling is a setting under Tools > Program Settings. You can set it to a percentage which will enlarge the entire interface, text and all. I was just wondering why everything seemed relatively large in your layout and thought maybe you had adjusted that setting, but if you don't know what it is you probably didn't.

Can you reproduce this problem with the KJV merely by opening the KJV by itself (start with a blank layout and open it from the Library or the command bar), and trying to jump to a particular verse by typing it into the Reference box at the top of the KJV window? Or does it only happen when it's in that smaller window as part of the layout that comes up when you enter a verse reference on the home page?

Perhaps the KJV resource file you've got is corrupted and the milestone markers are off by a verse. You might try hiding that resource (drag it from your Library to the Hidden Resources section of Program Settings, which you have to click on to expand first before you can drag things to it), then close Logos and re-open it, then unhide the KJV (right click on it in Hidden Resources and choose Unhide) and close and re-open Logos again. This will force a new copy of the KJV resource file to be downloaded from the Logos server.

Scaling is set to 100%.

Opening the KJV from the Library and typing in a verse, brings it up right to the exact verse each time.

I hid this as instructed, closed, opened, downloaded the KJV1900 again - but bringing it up again from the Go box, brings up the wrong verse still. I typed in for instance, James 4:4 and it still comes up to James 4:3. I should add, that now that all this is up before me, I can type James 4:4 and it will come up accurately each time. But from the Go box, it will not.

Other versions work correctly - the KJV will not.

OK, I can't think of anything else to try. It's probably time for you to contact Logos Tech Support and see if they can step through it with you by connecting to your computer and figure it out. You might need to escalate it up to Tech Support Level 2 if the Level 1 person can't help you out.

Sometimes mine is off by a tad, which could be a verse depending on the length of the verse. You should have tried linking a note to some of the Church Fathers in L3 -- sometimes it was necessary to scroll a screen page or more to reach your citation. That's why I still have a little highlighting in the Church Fathers since I used it to finally locate the passage when I had gotten to the neighborhood. This was transferred over to L4, and I haven't gotten around to deleting the highlighting (I use highlighting for one purpose in L4 -- it's for when I'm working on something and notice another rabbit trail I want to follow up, but afterwards I delete it. L4 has changed that so a little difference doesn't bother me a bit.

In this, you make a good point. Unfortunately, I was not around in the days of Logos 3. Had I been, I suppose I'd not noticed a verse being off by one or so. It then appears from what you're saying, this *could* be a norm and not a most unusual thing. Very good! Thanks for your input George!

For Logos 4, appears Bible text rendering includes lines not visible on screen (perhaps whole chapter), then "scrolling" chapter until line with desired verse number appears in first line displayed (which may not have verse # as left most character). Approximately 33 % of the Bibles in my Library displayed James 2:2 as first line with verse number left justified (changing Bibles using parallel resources in a largish floating window).

Observation: Bible verse numbers do not correspond with Greek sentence boundaries. For example, Matthew 1:2-16 and Ephesians 4:11-25 have 15 verse numbers for 3 Greek sentences. James 2:2-4 has 3 verse numbers for one Greek sentence. In contrast, James 2:19 spans three Greek sentences while James 4:2 spans four Greek sentences.
