1:9–10 These verses enumerate the articles given to Sheshbazzar by Mithredath. There were more than one thousand gold and silver dishes, almost five hundred gold and silver bowls and more than one thousand other articles. From the detail of these verses it is at once apparent that Ezra had an official document at his disposal. This document was evidently an inventory of the items returned by Cyrus. Perhaps this document had been preserved in the temple archives. The scribe also had a copy of the letter that had been sent to Darius by Tattenai (cf. Ezra 5:6–17).
