Initial PBB Observations

As a compiler of a number of Libronix PBB resources, my first foray into building PBBs in Logos 4 has been largely positive. I did a test compiling chapters of John Donne's "Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions" and E.W. Hengstenberg's commentary on Ezekiel. These files were original filtered and tagged HTML files brought into Word and saved as .docx. I did no further editing of the files. Here are my initial observations:

1. Hebrew text comes in nicely, with pointing intact.

2. Formatting is pretty much spot on.

3. Logos 4 does not create footnotes. It does not seem to recognize the text tags of the footnotes.

4. Bible verses show up just fine if the verse is in a convention recognized by the compiler (e.g. Psa. 1:1, Luke 1:1, etc.) However, verse references I had to individually tag because they would not be recognized by the compiler (e.g. Vers. 16, etc. -- which I tagged to point to a specific reference) does not work.

5. It appears that an entire book must comprise one source file, not many. Building PBBs in John McComb's Builder Builder for Libronix required that I create individual files for each chapter in a book. This is a different process in Logos 4. In Libronix, when I compiled a PBB, there could be many source files.

6. Converting the source HTML files in Word strips out the links which I used for the TOC.

So, I am impressed so far, but those of us who have a lot of source HTML files will have to do some work for these to be compiled in Logos 4.

Bill this is just the first beta, so lets wait and see, what Logos has down the pipe.

My impression differs on this point - but I ran into several formatting problems. I'm sure they'll get the tagging worked out soon.

I have seen weird formatting issues. Then again, I was trying to import a docx that had been converted from a PDF file that had odd page sizes and formatting. The file displayed ok in Word, but was mangled badly by Logos PBB.

Hardly surprising for a first beta - I wonder how well PBB will be able to cope with weird Word document layouts - multiple columns, text boxes and the like. Something to try over the weekend, I think.

Other than that, I have been impressed with this PBB version - it feels faster than Libronix and, aside from leaving some meta data tags in the text, it imported a whole Bible text in a few minutes...

It turned multiple columns into one column in the resulting file, but at least it maintained all the text. And given Logos's method of doing columns (either the whole book is mult-column or it's not) that's the best I can expect, and in fact it was just fine with me.

It does not handle text boxes yet.

I have a similar experience. I did a couple of Bibles and a few books so far and it is very fast and easy.

Just one note, When you have projects with many HTML files, you can open the first one in the MS Word (I use Office 2010) and that use INSERT ribbon and Insert Object menu and Insert Text From File option. (I translate that from my Czech Office, so I hope I did not confuse you.) You can get text from multiple files (HTML, doc, etc.) It helped me to create a source file for the PBB Bible from the HTML (for Libronix v3 pbb) files in just a few minutes.

I have compiled several doc's I had saved and noticed:

    1) formatting of paragraphs has issues- PBB seems to ignore spacing between paragraphs

    2) Footnote or endnote numbers appear in doc but not hyperlinked to reference

    3) some reference notes contained within parenthesis disappered but the parenthesis were still there

I noticed this with smart tags applied. I stripped out the smart tags and the references re-appeared.

Thank you, Bohuslav. I understood you perfectly and the solution worked great.

These are known issues - see section in release notes (http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_4.3_Beta_6)

Would you recommend  AVS Document Converter to convert HTML to DOCX?

    Welcome [:D]

Found a web page with Word macro tutorial for converting all docx files in one folder to doc

    http://www.maxhire.net/robo/Projects/MaxHire%20Knowledge%20Base/Files_and_Documents/docx-doc.htm

    with follow-up to navigate sub-folders:

    http://forums.techguy.org/business-applications/975642-word-macros-convert-files-docx.html

Option: could change docx source to html and change doc output to docx.

    Keep Smiling [:)]

I went back and re-read Bohuslav's post and found the answer in his note to use Word 2010 and the insert text function. It works great!

    Thanks everyone.
