Word Alterations with the "Highlighting Tool" ...

Hello

I would like to have the ability to "change words" with the Highlighting tool in Logos.

For e.g.

There are times when I am reading a really good commentary concerning a particular verse and all of the sudden the word "story" is tossed out and completely overthrows the meaning of what they were saying. As if what they were referring to was fictional. I would much rather have the word "Account" in it's place.

Maybe a trivial example, but none the less the idea is presented

If you don't like the words then I would suggest you write your own book. When you change what an author says, it is no longer the same book.

However, I guess a "strikethrough" or any of the Emphasis markup could change the original authors meaning.

I guess it all depends on the "Buyers taste" with the Convenient Mark-up Tool.

Considering this does not effect "Every" copy of this book (and is 100% removable , but instead, uses the Convenient - Well made Emphasis Markup tool, to benefit the reader. I don't see a problem. Thus,

"I suppose the Original meaning of any Particular book in any place could be altered with the use of the Emphasis Markup tool."

Considering no one book (on most occasions) is agreeable 100%.

You can do this. You'd have to create a custom highlighting style for every new word you'd want to replace.

To do this, create a highlighting style that make the selected word small and white (to match with the background) and then replaces it with the word you want. You can see us doing something similar with our Lord-->Yahweh filter http://community.logos.com/forums/t/16999.aspx

Why don't you simply create a note file detailing your thoughts on particular statements where you disagree? There is no need to be changing the program or the resources for that. We do make suggestions regarding things we would like to see added to the program or changed to accomplish particular purposes, but I get the impression that in every post your thought is "How can I change the program?" I would say you should first learn the program and use it. If you then find that certain aspects don't meet your needs, a suggestion may be in order. I don't see much reason to suggest a palate to mark up texts that glitters or sends stars over the screen when hovered or whatever is particularly helpful. I wouldn't write this publicly, but there doesn't seem to be much of a way to write privately to you. Use the program first.

As I said, we do make suggestions, but we also ask questions regarding how we can best perform a search or some other operation of the program. What has put me off is simply that you appear out of nowhere making suggestion after suggestion that really doesn't amount to a hill of beans. I don't want to discourage you since I do like your enthusiasm, but please direct it primarily toward the use of the program AS IS. If the program as is doesn't meet some need THEN make a suggestion.

Hi George

Only two posts that I can think of have referred to L5 (which might be a stretch, but I will wait for Logos to stop that one). The rest have been about Logos as it stands. Most of us agree that L4 and L3 are not the same program in alot of ways, Thus this suggestion forum (for the most part No offense friend but you spend more time rebuking me than offering your own suggestions. I would love to hear some...

In the mean time, I enjoy, and hope help, the thinking and or Creativity of other users that desire to be as Creative, or personally expressive as possible. Like they have helped me. I enjoyed this forum and Hope to hear More!

Douglas, this is a generic comment not directed at you but trying to reword George's comments (and implied thoughts as I'd reinvent them) for everyone.

Some people have concerns that if we bombard Logos with too many suggestions, it becomes a burden on Logos and needed feature modifications may got lost in the chaff
Some people make suggestions that indicate they haven't learned to use Logos as it exists - this may cause Logos to prioritize the modification of current features over the addition of new features. Yes, I have a concrete example which I will not give.
Some suggestions need to be presented better - an explanation as to why the suggestion is better than the current implementation. Otherwise suggestions simply become a litany of how a particular user prefers to work.
Some suggestions are simply "frosting on the cake" - nice to have but in no way essential; Many would like these held until we have a fully function L4 to determine what "frosting" is most beneficial.
Some people who read all the threads in one or more of the forums, get annoyed at reading "brainstorming" that leads to many threads that require no attention ... but you only know that after reading them.
Some ideas are creative and useful but not compatible with the basic structure of L4. They need to be molded into a potential L4 extension before being presented on the forums.

Okay, so George didn't think the categories out like that ... but, hey, he might come up with this list or a similar list if I pushed him into it.[:D]

** This along with #1 & 3's rewording sounds to be a doubting discertaion concerning Logos' ability to make proper business descions about Good or Bad (or Ready) Ideas. I am sure they can see who is offering what, and above that what the Majority thinks. If they pick out an Idea to implemenmt that has had no "replys", that is based on their Wisdom and God's leading. **Most Suggestions in the Forum could be explained better or more Elaberately (if user inquiry demands), others are just Simple.

Note: I believe, A 40 or 50 million dollar company can properly handle their own Forum, if it is valuable and necessary to them to do so..

Douglas, let me share with you what I do. When I come across something I disagree with or plain dislike I'll highlight the word or sentence and then create a note and then change the note color to orange. So, whenever I see an orange highlight I can hover over the box and get my reason for disagreeing or disliking that.

However, with the example that you gave, the word "story" can be value-neutral, meaning the author simply means a series of events in a narrative without comment on it being true or fictional. Only a careful reading of the author can reveal what is meant, and even if he or she thinks something is fictional when you don't doesn't mean that observations about the shape of the narrative are wrong or unhelpful.

I really wasn't expecting a response - agreement or disagreement. I wasn't saying that the statements were or were not justified. I was just trying to explain how some other people might see it - not all people and not all points for all people. I apologize if it came across as discouraging ideas rather than encouraging thoughtful presentation of ideas.

I don't know if you have ever been on the receiving end of suggestions - I was the head of IT for payroll/personnel handling a payroll of over $1,000,000,000 per year. I retired nearly ten years ago so you can probably up the dollars significantly now. I do know how suggestions did or did not get serious consideration - much as I could tell you what resumes will or will not get read. True I had far fewer end users than Logos but I suspect the volume of end users increases rather than decreases the need to take care in the presentation of suggestions ... and not get caught in the traps I tried to describe. If you find my post less than helpful, ignore it. If you find parts of it helpful, that's fine too.
