Hi,

Using the ESV, I look up 2 Cor 13:14. From the interlinear panel I select 'grace', right click, select 'lemma' and run 'search this resource'.

The result is displayed, and the analysis view lists the article for some verses. For example, Rom 3:24 gives two hits, one for the article and one for 'grace'.

I am not sure why. Presumably this is also affecting the statistics. I get the same result with 'love'. I haven't tried fellowship yet. Yes, I am preparing for Trinity Sunday!!

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

The Analysis view counts things differently than you might think. To display all of the information that is associated with the lemma it has to duplicate the information across a line or two. So for example if an English word is tagged with 2 Greek words and you search for one of them, since Analysis is designed to give you all associated information it will give you two lines for that hit so that both Greek lemmas can be displayed.

For many Morph searches the Reverse Interlinears will give funky results like this. Does this make sense?

Where can I find out exactly what the analysis is counting?

I am not sure that I understand what is going on. However, that is less important than getting the right results! I have followed the example in the 'Learn to use ' video as closely as I can. If I do a lemma search on 'charis' from the ESV I get 31 hits in Romans. If I change the version to NA27 I get 24 hits. I thought the lemma search was based on the Greek, presumably NA27, though I am not sure about that.

Assuming that the NA27 is correct (EDNT also reports 24 occurances) what is the value of the search on the lemma from the ESV? In other words, what information is it giving me? Do I need to manually check all the reported 'hits'? If so a printed concordance would be as quick!!!

When you start out on the wrong foot, you're out of step for the rest of the parade. Ditch the interlinear and go to the NA 27. If you can't read the Greek, an interlinear isn't going to do you a dime's worth of good.

You are right, of course. However, the facts are simple enough: my Greek is weak and I am preaching at 11am this Sunday and I am trying to do the best I can with the tools available to me.

I can certainly understand that. I would advise you, however, to forget about trying to puzzle out the Greek and simply open a commentary which you have found to be reliable then use what Greek you do know to evaluate what is being said. Most of all, read the context of the passage to be sure that you are getting the thrust of what is being said rather than seizing on one point and running with it. My dictum on the b-greek forum has been "context is king." If it doesn't fit the context then you haven't understood it.

Ok, Analysis is counting each line. To explain why there are lines duplicating info see the picture below.

It is examples like this that the ONLY reason I would use Analysis view on a Greek search in an RI is to get a survey of how that translation translates a particular word. If you use it for original language work you will get unreliable results.

Even on the NA27, alternate taggings can inflate counts. Only use statistics from Verses/Aligned view searches.

The 'analysis' view gives misleading information. I experiemented by setting up a lemma search on 'charis' in 1 & 2 Corinthians, from the ESV. All four views in the result panel show 28 hits in 26 verses. If I group the results by books, which I can only do in the 'analysis' view, the total still shows 28 in 26 verses, but the hits shown for 1 Corinthians is 12 and for 2 Corinthians it is 23, i.e. total of 35!

I suppose my disappointment is that I was following the 'Learn to use …' methodology from the greek31 video.

I will stick to your advice and use the verse/aligned views.

Well put...that's a good point to remember for those who are not pastors also (like myself)
