Catalog.db size

I was trying to update my data on Mark Barnes's excellent library view utility.

I deleted my data but then realised that I could not upload my more recent data file because of the size.

On Mark's website, Mark says

"If your catalog.db file is more than 131,072kb, you won’t be able to upload it. If your library is less than approximately 11,900 resources, you should be OK."

Mark seems to have estimated that 11900 resources equate to about 130 Mb.

My file is currently standing at 181Mb for about 3700 resources.

Is this normal? i.e. Marks estimate is wrong or my understanding is wrong?

I do not have much experience with db files, but years of enjoying the delights of compacting mdb files (MS Access). Is there an equivalent compacting process for db files?

Mark's utility is useful not only in seeing my library graphically (come on Logos!) but in seeing a little info about others ratings and libraries (anonymous of course). I would love to be able to use it again ... but the file size issue seems to be in the way.

My catalog.db is 13.6 MB for 1020 resources, so I would calculate 9600 resources rather than 11900; so your 181 MB is suspicious. SQlite Database Browser has a Compact function but first make a copy of the database (also note that I have no experience with this feature).

Mark's estimate is an estimate. But it is an accurate estimate.

Dave is right. There is something wrong with your file. My catalog.db file is 61.3MB for 5974 resources.

Question for Dave: What could cause a bloated catalog file? Is it possible for indexing to pile duplicate entries and still be functional?

Question for Martin: Are you running on Windows or Mac? (Not sure it would make a difference. Just curious.)

Dave is right. There is something wrong with your file. My catalog.db file is 61.3MB for 5974 resources.

Mine's 157,2 for about half of that.

Good question! This file size was for the mac, but I have an identical install running under a W7 virtual machine ... I just never thought to fire it up and look!

The windows version of Catalog.db is just 45 Mb (not the 181Mb of the mac version, same resources).

I had presumed that the data structures were the same and the core difference between the two was the UI ... obviously not!

I will have a look for that app that might compact the database, and i should be able to use the windows version for Mark's utility ... curious though. I'll play with compaction and ask a question in the Mac Beta forum.

It's possible there's a bug in the Mac version that doesn't automatically compact the file. (In SQLite, this process is called vacuuming.)
