Using Logos 3 alongside Logos 4

Thanks for the great work!

I have a few questions, and though they might be already out there, couldn't find them (if you could direct me to where, that would also be great.)

I will probably continue to use L3 with L4 as my netbook will not handle well L4. L3 I use Gold, and I upgraded to Platinum for L4. In that case,

1) How does the licensing work? Do I get L4 titles with my L3?

2) Should I keep my prepubs at 3.0 CD-ROM? If I change them to Download, will I be able to use them for both L3 and L4? I like having my purchases on discs for situations where I may not have internet connection, though I often download the files even when I purchase a CD-ROM. So if I continue to buy the 3.0 CD-ROM, how will it work? Will it only update on a computer with L3? And if I update on a computer with L3, will that automatically be reflected to L4 and the L4 file downloaded?

3) What exactly is the 'just engine'? If as mentioned above, I plan to keep the L3 for my netbook, should I update the engine on my netbook as well? (What's the best option for a netbook?)

If someone could direct me to the proper link, that would be just as great.

Hi Keiko,

Great question! So, this is what I did: I went to L3 and checked for a specific title that I just got with the new L4 package: it was not there.

I went under Tools/Library Management/Synchronize Licences and synchronized.

I ran Libronix update: it said "no update".

I went to Logos.com, found the resource file and downloaded it to the resource folder of L3: Bingo! Now it shows in L3 unlocked and all.

I suspect that the tech reps will have to send a license script file for the new titles to be enabled as a bundle in L3. If not, individual books would have to be downloaded manually.

Is there a danger of the Logos ftp site deleting all the Version 3.0 files any time soon?

I wonder if it isn't wise to buy everything on CD in version 3.0 from here on out and synchronize licenses with the Logos server and let Logos 4 download it's own resources. That way I can continue to use the Version 3.0 features that aren't available in Version 4 yet and still enjoy the greatly expanded library I now have.

Another related question is: Will all the Pre-Pubs I have on order as downloads be delivered only in Version 4 format?

Guess what? Since my successful experience with one of the resources, I have been going one by one through the new resources and found out that actually, many of them do not show as downloadable as single products, but as pre-pubs still under development.

Perhaps, we'll have to wait longer to have some of these available in L3. Some resources such as the new interlinears (NASB95, NIV, NKJV, KJV, NRSV) don't show at all in a product search.

So, the question is not fully elucidated...

Thanks for the information!

Synchronizing license --> downloading resource worked fine.

I guess I'll just download the files that I want to use for now and wait and see how and if any other all- encompassing option will be made available.

Logos isn't going to do that! But you just need to synchronize that v3 licence and copy *.lbxlls resources from your L4 resources folder to your L3 resource path (ignore duplicates). Some *.logos4 resources will have *.lbxlls files on the FTP site (same filename), but they may be duplicates as well! Another thought is to use Location Manager to find unlocked resources on your v3 installation DVD!

Once you activate a L3 CD-ROM purchase (by entering a serial #) it will become available to L4 and be automatically downloaded. The same applies after you purchase an L3 downloadable resource. L4 can also scan a CD-ROM for potential resources (scan <CD drive> in Command bar).

Not sure where you got 'just engine' from, but it probably refers to the software only, and shouldn't concern you. To update your L3 engine use Tools | Libronix Update

Dave, the copy idea did not yield much. I found that the files that had lbxlls extensions tended to be those I had already in L3 before I got the new L4 package. The new resources tend to have .logos4 extensions.

As for using the installation DVD, it would be a good idea if my DVD was more recent because a lot of the newly included resources are also recent additions to Logos products. This is where the L4 DVD could prove handy though perhaps it would not include the books in L3 format. The alternative would be to order a recent L3 DVD but this seems a lot of trouble to get the books one paid for.

As for the FTP files, I suppose that one would have to seek .logos4 files that have the same name but the .lbxlls extension. I checked. There are some titles, but after about 10 minutes of comparing my list of .logos4 resources with the .lbxlls files I already have and the ones available on the FTP server, I came to the conclusion that I had better usage of my time. For those of us who have extensive libraries, this process of comparison could take hours.

Perhaps if someone knew a utility that can compare find files of the same names that have different extensions between a computer and FTP server. Somehow this all sounds way too complicated.

I think I heard somebody from Logos saying they will try to put many of the resources in Libronix format on the FTP for us to be able to get them working in v3. However I doubt it would be a hight priority for them. Logos 4 is now in need of all the attention obviously.
