Logos 4 on a netbook - giving up

Logos 4 is reasonable on my desktop - sluggish with delays but overall pretty good (Vista 32bit, Quad core with 4Gb of RAM)

However, on my netbook it's proving to just be a totally frustrating experience. Twice now Logos 4 has spent hours (over 24 hours the first time about 15 this time) creating the index only to delete it and start again. I'm about ready to give up and go back to version 3 because whilst indexing is going on Logos 4 is pretty much unusable.(I've got an Acer Aspire One with 2Gb RAM and an Atom N280 1.66GHz processor)

I'm very disappointed because I do a lot of my work on the netbook. Logos 3 runs without problems but Logos 4 on my netbook is turning out to be a real dud.

Maybe will try again in a few weeks or if someone can give any suggestions on the indexing problem but for now I've got other things to do.

Adrian - we meet again.

I have a netbook and it runs Logos better than my older notebook. I used only the netbook for almost 5 weeks of the Beta testing... I have had absolutely no problems.

Until the upgrade, I had a library of 2600 resources, including many of the larger resources available (such as Liddel Scott). Indexing then took me over 17 hours each time. It is especially slow with Reverse Interlinears.

Even though indexing takes so long, I chose after upgrading and now with 3500 resources to perfom a full index. It's still going 20 hours later and will be a while yet (6 or 7 hours I'm guessing). BUT, it is worth it.

Please take my suggestion to turn off all downloads in v4.0 while indexing is running... Also, turn off any automatic updating of Windows....

How large is you hard drive? Is it partitioned?

Hello Damian, I think I'm in the right place now [:)]

I'll have another go... I've turned off Logos updates and Windows updates. The hard drive is 160 Gb partitioned into a 30 Gb c: drive and a 113Gb d: (data) drive. Not sure where the rest of the space has gone, but that's not so important right now [:)]

I've just noticed that there's only 2Gb left on the c: drive which is where Logos 4 has installed itself. Could that be part of the problem? I think maybe I'll unpartition the drive and see if that helps.

You will need to install on . There is not enough room for the index to be built on the C: drive.

Hard as it is to believe, there were no netbooks when we started designing Logos 4.... so we expected laptops to keep getting better, not to go backwards in performance.

Netbooks are cool -- there are some around the office, and they've got some big fans. (And I keep playing with them at BestBuy...almost ready to purchase...) But they have a real range of performance characteristics, most of which are outside our design targets.

If you can get it to work and perform well, that's great. I know some people have. But Logos 4 isn't really designed for that form factor.

We'll continue to try and optimize. I think our future plans to offer access to your library via the web may help, too, since many netbooks seem to be "Internet terminals."

Yeah, that looks to be the problem.

I'm going to do a backup and then either enlarge the c: partition or just un-partition the drive. I'll have to see which is the easiest to do using Acronis Disk Director.

Partitioning was an attempt to keep things neat but probably isn't worth the pain. I'd rather have Logos 4 working than have a partition.

I've been immensely happy with how Logos 3 has run on my netbook. I wasn't too optimistic at the start but it's proved to be a great experience. Searching was sometimes a little slow but I never did that much, using it more for reading. That's where the form factor was a real winner... great for reading in bed.

Overall very pleased with Logos 4 too. I've already picked up a bunch of tips here on the forums. The new resources are more than worth the price of admission - Gold 3 to Gold 4. The interface is very nice too though it does feel a little weird after a few years on version 3.

Oh Bob! What is performance? I think they're a leap forward....

On topic. The only problem I have is with Indexing.... And now that I'm used to it - it is simply not a problem. I know what to expect and I'm so proud of my little boy for chugging away quietly in the corner. He's actually more usable during indexing that my notebook but the notebook indexes significantly daster - go figure.

I did add an extra GB of Ram and installed a 320GB 7200RPM hard drive (my EEE only came with an 80GB Hard Drive partitioned in 2). That was a problem. But a simple clone and I was away....

Hmm you should have seen the comments on the interface when beta testing started! It is certainly an experience but I think Logos have trumped by sitting down and redesigning into a cleaner interface with all the guts underneath...from what I hear Windows 7 is supposedly like this but haven't really had chance to play...any other Win 7 users got comments on that?

I have been running on a Samsung n110|2GB Ram|160GB HDD

I get an occasional freeze while the graphics catch up. but beyond that have had no issues since Beta 1

I also use mine daily in preference to my desktop

If its in middle of indexing choose hibernate rather than shutdown, it will not force a restart of reindexing process then

You said it nice [:)] but believe me, you will get used to it. It is much better than v3.

My experience with the partitions is that they were good in the time before the backup possibility to the external haddisks. Now with the new OS keeping the user files in the special folder, I see it just a complication. I make a disk image from time to time plus backup data every week and it works well. I had 2 harddisk crashes last year (the only 2 inmy 20 years of using computers) and I did not loose any single file (well, just a few).

Adrian, I have run Logos 4 on a netbook for some time (Beta tester) and recommend you let it run overnight to get the indexing out of the way, then performance of my Logos 4 is superior to Logos 3 on mine.

Believe it or not, I've been running Logos 4 on a 2-3 year-old Fujitsu Lifebook 2-lb tablet PC, with 512MB RAM (!) and 160GB hard drive.

Performance is a bit sluggish (not as snappy as my larger laptop -- 2GB RAM, Win7), but I do the following to compensate/survive:

- Run downloads and indexing overnight

- Turn off all sections in the Passage Guide except the Commentaries section, and turn on other sections as needed

- My machine is always set to hibernate, not shut down

I actually find it very usable when I'm out of the house. I fold my screen over (it's a tablet PC), switch the screen to portrait mode, get one of the new LE books into Reading View, increase the font size a little, and I ended up a very pleasant ebook reader!

I thought cloning, e.g. Ghost, worked reliably only for identical drives. I'd love to have a fast 320GB drive, how did you clone?

Not sure if it's of huge interest... indexing was going fine and then I started Logos 4 because I'd just bought a new commentary and thought that if I downloaded it before indexing had finished it would get included in the main index rather than in the supplemental index.

Well, it'll certainly be in the main index because the index file got deleted and Logos 4 is now in the process of recreating it. Opps. Lesson learned here: don't update whilst creating the index. I should have realised that from Damian's suggestions but I was feeling optimistic [:)]

Looks like another 14 hours of indexing to go, and all because I didn't wait [:$]

Scott, I used one of the Acronis programs on the 30 day trial.

The drives don't need to be the same size, it proportionally expanded my partitions.

My notebook originally came with a 40GB drive, 3 years ago I upgraded that using a kit from Acorn - that was truly simple.
