How to download newsgroups

I just want to make sure I have all the threads in the newsgroups, before Logos would shut them down. It shows for instance 59059 posts in the General Group, but it downloads only 202. What does it mean? Is there any way I can get all of them? I would like to backup all the threads, just in case I need them. Any suggestion?

Your news reader is restricting the number of headers to 200 at a time. So repeat the operation of downloading headers or (more practically) go to Options and change the number - no number usually means download everything. To be more specific I need to know your news reader.

Note that after downloading the headers you have to select/read the ones you wish to save, because the content/message is not downloaded until you do that.

Thank you Dave for your answer. I use Windows Mail in Vista. Yes, I found already the limit for downloading of the messages is 1000. So I pushed "load another 1000" and it looks it will do the thing. I appreciate your help. Thanks.

I got it. It is about 1,5 GB. I just feel better to backup it [:)]

Great! Over the years I've accumulated ones of interest by copying them to my "Archived News" folder in Outlook Express.

I use to get the newsgroups back in the old Outlook Express days (ugh!) and I too filed many away for archive.  When I switched to MS Outlook 2003 I lost that ability to download.  I use Windows XP, Media Center 2002, Sp3, and Outlook 2003.  I do not plan on upgrading to Vista.  What newsgroup reader can I use?  I have not found anything that allows me to download the newsgroup in Outlook.

    Thanks

Why you would not use Outlook Express? I have Vista and I use Outlook 2007 for my emails but Windows Mail (actually a new version of Outlook Express) just for the newsgroups. Before I started to use Vista, I did basically the same in WinXP only with Outlook Express.

hy you would not use Outlook Express?

I have had the same feelings as Ron.  The reason that I do not and WILL not use Outlook or Outlook Express is because throughout their history, they have been a MAGNET for virus and worm attacks ... a much "softer target" than even IE or IIS.  Hacker's paradise ...

Try Windows Live! or Mozilla Thunderbird which handle both e-mail and news (you didn't lose any ability as Outlook Express was always available as the news reader for MS Outlook 2003 and earlier).
