I asked (or hinted at) this a few weeks ago in another thread, bit it may have gotten lost in the initial PBB swamp of posts. It is also important enough to have a dedicated thread.
I understand that Logos will need to keep control of adding new datatypes. Allowing the free control of datatype by Logos users, or even PBB users would soon make the concept of datatypes worthless with the creation of competing types (e.g. JOE, JOEY, and JOSE all representing Josephus
With that said, with the addition of PBB we REALLY need to have the ability to request the creation of new datatypes, or maybe even create them pending an approval from someone at Logos. This is most critical is for author datatypes. here are just a couple of concrete examples for which I have not been able to locate author datatypes:
- Aphrahat is an important (especially if you are interested in the interaction between Christians and Jews) Church Father (ca 340 CE) who wrote 23 essays and for whom there is no datatype. Some of his works are in English translation in the ANF/NPNF series and are available in Logos. There are derivative works available within Logos (Symbols of Church and Kingdom by Murray).
- Alexander Campbell was one of the most prolific Christian authors of the 19th century. Nearly the entire corpus of his writing (including the Millenial Harbinger) is available online and in the public domain and so should be able to be converted into PBB resources (Cal Habig has converted some of these works to L3 PBB).
But, also needed are datatypes for works. Two further examples are the Demonstrations of Aphrahat and the Odes of Solomon. Again, both sets of works are becoming more important for Early Christian Studies. A subset of the Demonstrations exist within Logos format and there is a commentary on the Odes in the Hermeneia Commentary series also available in Logos.
So, as can be seen, without even bringing in authors and works which are not yet available within Logos there is a clear need for adding additional datatypes. With the coming of PBB this need will only increase.
