I ordered the gold today, and I hear the download is huge???? I have the live dvd's in the mail on the way:) I dont know if I want to try the download, or hold off and just install the dvds...

Cant wait to start playing with it!!!

Looking at http://www.logos.com/support/techfaq noticed Scholar's Gold has 6.97 GB to download (depends on internet connection speed).

I really like eSword, especially its ability to bring in other peoples modules.

And you'll love Logos4.

But the really exciting thing you mentioned is 'seminary'. Now, that's definitely 'the gold'!

Ryan, I've been with Logos for a year now. If someone could have told me two practical things to get me started in the program I would name these two.

1. Prioritize your resources

2. Play around with different Layouts

Both of these activities are explained brilliantly by Mark Barnes in his videos found here. In fact when I started I copied his layout and resource prioritization (sorry Mark, you're famous!). Once you become more comfortable in the program and have an idea of what resources you own, you can begin to deviate.

I will say myself and most likely many others have found the program intimidating at first. That's why I recommend the "jump in the water head first and start kicking" method.

Welcome, Ryan. You won't look back: especially as you will be using it for your studies, you'll enjoy it.

No need to wait for the DVDs, unless you are paying per gigabyte. I did originally buy the CDs of a previous version, but just downloaded Logos 4. Then when my laptop failed last Christmas, I just logged in and it all downloaded onto my new one.

Do follow Ryan's advice about prioritizing. And do tell us how you go, particularly if you get stuck somewhere.

Yes, I had used e-sword for quite a while just for that feature. But Logos Personal Books (now in Beta) are so much superior IMHO.

Welcome to the world of Logos.

It will take a while for L4 to download. It will take longer for it to index. Most people find that it is easier on their patience to let the indexing run while they sleep.

Browse the forum.

Ask questions on the forum for very quick and helpful answers from knowledgeable users.

Logos has a huge amount of resources (well over 10,000 titles) with more added weekly.

Check Products, Prepublications to see what is being added. They show up as they are added. They can be sorted by Ship Date to see what is coming out the door next.

There are great values that come through Community Pricing. They can be bought for pennies on the dollar compared to what they will cost later.

Logos has frequent sales that offer great values.

Signup for the Newswire for info.

Logos even runs some Facebook specials if you are a FB user. Just "like" the Logos FB page.

Wow, you are at the start of a great journey, enjoy it.

I am working on my THD, and use Logos all the time! But I also use E-Sword and theWord an even more powerful program to store much of my public domain materials and many of my notes!

Currently the Logos PBB is still an unknown, hopefully when it is done we can use it to put public domain material into Logos, but right now there is nothing like that for Logos 4.

As great as going to Seminary is, I have learned more through using Logos than from Seminary! Logos is a complete educational system once you understand how to use it. Look at the books you place into Logos not just as resources, but as teachers you can ask questions about any subject for the rest of your life!

Learning how to use collections and priortize your resources will help you make more sense of the results you get when you ask your "teachers" questions.

Spend the time now, learning how to use the software, there are a lot of free resources, but if you have the money, I believe you will learn things the quickest by spending the money on the Camp Logos videos. Nothing helped me as much and got me to understand how powerful the system really is!

If you want to use public domain material for studies you can save some money, by looking into theWord, it is very powerful, and allows you to make your own collections to search, save your work layouts, take notes, and put public domain materials in it for free, and those books become searchable and much more.

It is not as great as Logos, but free is much more affordable. It has allowed me to have a much bigger and better Logos library, by using my hard earned money on the great Logos resources that are copyrighted, and collecting theWord free public domain material at the same time.

I currently have over 2000 books in myWord program and use it almost daily along with Logos. I also have E-sword but it does not allow the books to be put into collections and searched, which is very important. But it does have a lot of resources for free, I can think of one site that contains over 2500 free modules. If I want to make an E-Sword module more useful, I can always cut and paste the contents into theWord and save it as a theWord module, and then I can search it, but it into collections and use it in layouts.

Also My father in law who has it, has esword and other programs i think linked to his logos 4, so they come up o the search? I think thats what he said???

Just to emphasize a point which has already been made: Be sure to check the prepubs (http://www.logos.com/products/search?Status=Pre-Pub) and the Community Pricing (http://www.logos.com/products/search?Status=Community+Pricing) offerings to get the cheaper prices (put those links in your browser favorites until you get them set in your history). Also put this in your favorites (http://wiki.logos.com/Quick_Installation_onto_multiple_computers) in case you ever need to reinstall. I also recommend making a Logos folder in your favorites for those links as well as for anything you want to buy but can't at the moment. As they have said, be sure to ask in the forum if you have any problems or questions. Someone will be there to mislead [6] give you advice. Obviously, I'm kidding about misleading -- they're a great bunch who will do their best to help (and let you know when it's beyond their abilities so that you need to contact support).

EDIT: One more thing. Watch out for that guy with the Jan Hus quote -- he's crazy.

Have option to customize Home Page content. Clicking "GO" button uses a pre-defined layout, which cannot be customized, but does use your library priorities (Top 5 Bibles plus Top Commentary that contain passage).

As noted above you can Customise the content but not the format, and some of the content is randomised in terms of what is available and the order it is presented - see http://wiki.logos.com/Visual_Glossary_%E2%80%93_Home_Page

Sorry if this was already answered but I don't have time to read all the posts.

I would definitely download. There is a good chance that if you wait for the DVD that you will have a large download afterwards anyway so to update all the resources so you might as well get a jump on things :-)
