Text to Speech on iPad

I use my PC to read the scripture, and other books, through its text to speech capabilities. I am seriously considering getting an iPad to increase my flexibility. I think I have to download an App for text to speech capability on the iPad. What I am wondering is, is the Logos App for iPad interactive with text to speech. It may be that I have not expressed my question clearly. If so, I will try again.

Sorry Bob, I have no idea what you are asking, but I will take a shot anyway. By "Text to speech" I assume you mean "will the iPad read text aloud to me." If this is what you mean, "Text to Speech" is not native in iOS 4. There are rumors that Apple is working on this feature, but it is not there yet. Apple has purchased one or two companies which develop such technology. It seems inevitable that this will be coming sooner or later.

To answer what I think you are asking, the Logos app for iOS does not currently have any "text to speech" capabilities as described here. Did that answer your question? If not, post again and I will take another shot [:)]

Bob, there is a Voice Over feature built into the iPad that you can try to see if it helps you with the Logos app. Go to the Settings app, select General, select Accessibility, then select Voice Over. There are many options to control how much it reads or doesn't read to you. Notice that when you have Voice Over turned on, your single taps will one make the iPad read to you. You will now have to double tap whenever you would normally single tap. Also, if you like the Voice Over feature, you can set a shortcut (triple click on the Home button) to turn Voice Over on and off as needed. Hope this helps, Peter.

I will amend my previous comments. Peter alerted me to a feature that is currently available, which is intended for visually impaired people. The way that it works it to speak out loud the buttons and folders you touch. It does not appear that the Logos app is set up to work with this feature, however.

I can tell you that the voice reading technology seemed good to me. After I could not get the Logos app to read for me, I tried to use safari (apple's web browser). It worked fine. For someone who is not visually impaired, however, I would think that the feature (in its current state) would get annoying very quickly. Everything that you do is spoken out loud to you (i.e. "open productivity folder.") It also changes the way that the iPad touch features work.

I did some more research and found a program which allows you to copy and paste text to be read. I would think this to be cumbersome, but it is another solution.

...Working off the info the previous posters have discovered, I noticed the voiceover feature does work with resources in biblia.com, Logos' online study site. I recommend you login with your Logos id at the site before you turn on the voiceover or you'll spend a good amount of time trying to get there. It seems to work with the ESV text so I assume other resources work as well.
