C. S. Lewis

No C.S. Lewis - REALLY? Are there plans for adding his works? Like his little works titled "The Screwtape Letters", "Mere Christianity" just to name a couple.

JCJN - This is a common request (as you can imagine). I am sure that Logos would love to carry his works. There seems to be some issue with the publisher and/or the Lewis estate. His stepson was in town earlier this year. I wish I had been able to ask him about it!

Let's wait until 2013, when a large number of his works will become Public Domain, from what I heard.

I think you are wrong. My understanding is that his estate can renew the copyright (and they should have the right to do so). I still have hope that something can be worked out sooner than later.

The copyright laws do vary somewhat by country - you may both be right. As I recall death year + 75 works after 1923 as a rough value. Lewis died in 1963
Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

[Y] I would love the works of Lewis. Probably against forum guidelines, but go check out Max McLean and "The Screwtape Letters" if you get a chance. I think he's currently in Southern California.

C. S. Lewis' family has renewed the copyright on all of his works. This means that the copyright expires, in the United States, 95 years after the books' publication dates.

I see that you can now get C. S. Lewis ebooks through Apple's ibook store. Does anyone know if the Lewis estate has OK'd electronic publications in general or just to Apple? I see that Amazon still does not have any Lewis ebooks :-/

I see apple got the rights, why Logos cannot get them?

Slava - I am not sure what the hold up is, but I have several thoughts:
- Logos does not employ copy protection.
- Publishers may prefer to work with the larger companies.
- See #1
Hopefully Logos will get permission soon!

I don't think #1 and #3 are exactly accurate. It's a different form of copy protection than other formats. Logos' copy protection is such that you have to have purchased the resource license in order to download it or install it, and you can only copy 100 pages at a time into Word or PDF. The latter part may be more lenient than Amazon's practice, but the former part is more strict. (Amazon and Apple's readers can install and use any resource that doesn't have a license restriction on it). Considering there are fairly easy ways of getting rid of copyright protection on Amazon and Apple formats, I'd say the Logos protection is actually pretty good. Sometimes it helps being the small company in the sea, as there isn't a body of sharks waiting to hack it apart!

There are no legal ways to get rid of the copyright protection on kindle & nook books, easy or otherwise.
Also, how is a "100 page at a time" copy protection? I believe that Kindle limits you to 10%.

How is that different than any other bookstore? You have to buy before you download!
