Notes PB's and 4.3

I have give Bob an earful for years over the innaequacy of notes in Logos [sorry Bob] now I have a strong reccomendation: Forget Notes inadequacies and go straight to PB, let me explain why..

ALL the key issues with notes complained about since the inception are overcome with PB:

1) Color text
2) Tables
3) Images
4) using [[@Bible:your_ref]] milestone means that the long standing issue of notes not staying in sync with Bible passages is over.. theoretically

Ok so you take a lot of notes, continue, but then transfer to PB, you could create a new PB each month if you were a verbose note taker or maybe turn it into a yearly/quarterly journal, the benefit of doing this would be your notes could be annoted. or highlighted..

You could still take your notes in Logos before transfering to the PB so either way is a win win

Domonic, PBB has great potential. I selected the text from this pdf file, and simply pasted into word without any formatting. Compare the results and see for yourself. A great way to share files.

Those who plan to convert from pdf to word, may want to invest in adobe 20.00 a year software. It is supposed to do a good job in maintaining the format.

hmm... forget notes...PBB. hmmm.

What about performance? I'm making some gross general assumptions here but notes is not that snappy at times now (referring to large notes) and if the performance of handouts (similar graphic/text load) is an indication of how that segment of the app would perform I'll need to upgrade my hardware, again.

Mind you I’m not dismissing the idea as I would love to have better layout and style capabilities in notes and handouts instead of going outside the app…. But I’m not sure that is realistic taking in mind some of the comments made in the past by LOGOS.

But maybe I'm a little short sighted since I have used PBB for around 2 year, since 4.0 came out I guess.

Anthony, try importing your note files into word, and then save them as a PBB file, and see how it works.

I see your point, but I'm not sure PB's are there quite yet. The biggest issue for me would be syncing between computers. Currently the Metadata syncs, but the files themselves do not.

This might be a way to fix notes for those that have the PB's setup, but will the rest of us have to buy the thing to use it??? If so, how much and when will it be coming out???

I am currently putting my notes in a free bible study program that allows me to do all kind of things with the notes, and I can build books to be searched and they allow pictures and all kinds of things! I would use Logos is this really changed the way you can store your notes and other things, but the price is important to me at this time! Almost, two years is a long wait for such an important feature!

100% agree. The potential I see in PB is outstanding. Bookmarks are also supported. So if I create a link in a Word doc to a bookmark in that word doc, the link is maintained in Logos. Hyperlinks are maintained so you can export a Guide to word and then import it back to L4 as a PB. This way as you are scrolling in your document a Guide PB can be scrolling right along with you. You can edit that guide to your hearts content. I am very excited about the possibilities and believe Bob and his fellow planners made the right, though unpopular decision. I'm sure there will still be some who advocate for stronger notes. However I'm fine with the PB Direction, personally.

Dominic, thanks for pointing this out. I went to this site and downloaded the htm file on the Commentary Template and unzipped it. Converted it to .docx in Word.

I then converted it into a PB. I will add all my Bible notes to the word document as times goes on. I also discovered that by linking the PB to my power look up tool, I can read an unmarked up Bible while I scroll along in my notes (or an actual Bible of course). In fact if you just make a PB out of your Bible notes file and even without adding milestones, you can scroll through your notes and the linked power look up tool will follow with the Bible references. I suspect this is the response Bob was expecting. However, I disagree strongly with you. Notes and PB serve different purposes. I will grant that I have been using notes for PB functions. I will convert those notes into PB. However,

Notes are short and frequently changing as new information becomes available
Notes have flags in the text they are notes on which can be turned on and off
Notes are independent - one note has no particular relationship to other notes on the text
Notes can provide to-do lists

To me saying that we don't need workable notes because we have PB's is equivalent to saying we don't need clippings because we have the reources. Yes, I am very pleased with PB's and can see them as a base for specialized documents - sermon add-in, handouts and lesson builder. But I still need notes as much as I did before PB's.

Question: Is 4.3 RC 1 something that I'm suppossed to get now or is it something that only beta testers can get? I've been reading a lot about it for the past 3 or 5 days and nothing has downloaded in my computer yet. I thought RC was considered a stable version and that it was released to everybody who owns the software. Anyway, any comments will be greatly appreciated.

A "Release Candidate" is still a "Beta," but is considered "stable." If you want it, you need to go through the same procedure as the Beta testers. The good news is that as a Beta goes to the RC stage, it is getting very close to release. They are currently on 4.3 RC-2.

I agree with you. I too have been using my notes for some PB functions (as in storing all of my seminary papers), but I am too lazy to move them into a PB now that they are in my notes.

I also do not see PB being a substitute for notes because, as you said, notes frequently change, and I do not want to recompile my notes (in a PB) every time I change them (this would be every time I use L4).

After all today we got the daily lectionary with the full complement of saints, an accurate title "Catholic - Latin rite - USA" and both the psalm response and the Gospel acclamation. It's taken a while but Louis St. Hilaire should get our thanks. I know he gets paid but he really put in the effort to get this right. And we know the daily RCL is on the way.
