Word Studies Word Usage in non biblical texts

Could someone help me to understand how (or if) I can search for greek word usage in books other than the bible. Say if I wanted to look up the greek word of pierce. Did Josephus use it in any of his writings? What was the word used to describe?

First you need to decide which instance of "pierce", because it's not necessarily the same Greek word. "Pierce" in Luke2:35 (ESV) and "pierced" in John 19:34 (ESV) translate different Greek words.

Right click on the word, then select Lemma on the right hand side, and select Bible Word Study on the left hand side. This is from the John 19:34 instance:

When the BWS window is finished loading, you should have a "Textual Searches" section near or at the bottom. The texts that show up there depend on which Greek texts you own in your Library:

If you click on any of those, it will open a Search window that shows all the instances.

Wow thanks for the fast reply. That was my question excatly. I notice that under your textual search Josephus, Apostolic Fathers, Josephus, Philo, Lliad come up. I get none of those (presumably because I haven't purchased them). I believe I have the scholars edition or something like that. Hope I'm not being a nuisance, but does anyone have any recommendations on which resources to purchase to at least get some references here from Josephus for example. Should I upgrade to the next library, or would simply purchasing a publication here and there work.

Well, it depends on the text that you want.

Josephus in Greek is not cheap as an individual package ($180). I paid $110 for it when it was on pre-pub back in 2008. It is included in the Portfolio library but I don't recommend that route unless you have a lot of spare money. So the individual package is the one you should probably get. If it's too expensive, you can always wait for a special sale, or use a monthly payment plan, or call sales to see if they can help you.

The Apostolic Fathers isn't currently included in any base packages, but it does come in several editions. The cheapest right now is the interlinear version that is currently on pre-pub, although that edition doesn't come with a true English translation while the other editions do.

Philo in Greek is $100 standalone, but it is included in Scholar's Gold if you are planning to go that route.

Homer's Iliad in Greek is less useful since it's written in classical Greek, but it can be had for $30.
