Beta 8: Media Resources: long wait, tiny size, not viewable/zoomable

Summary:

  • Links to Media Resources provide no hint of what is linked other than a tiny thumbnail (no metadata).
  • Links to Media Resources appear to hang app when touched (can be LONG download delay, but no wait / progress symbol)
  • Media Resources are too small to read, because not zoomable/scrollable. Especially bad for "portrait" size resources viewed in landscape mode

This is a key example where modifying the viewing engine to allow a certain amount of zoom/scroll is crucial. At the very least, the user should be able to zoom/scroll on photos and other images.

------------

To set context: I went to NKJV, Philippians 4:4. Used menu->passage guide, scrolled down to and touched to open the "Media Resources" section.

Touched on the second resource...

  • First, there's no popup or other hint to suggest what this resource is. And it is unreadably small. Now that I see it, I know it is from the Logos Hymnal... but I had no real clue before that.
  • Touched the resource, and the app appeared to hang completely. No "wait" or "progress" symbol.

Once the media resource appeared (Logos Hymnal Media Resource, "Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior"... but doesn't really matter)

  • It is a graphic, too small to read
  • I expected to be able to use a gesture to zoom in/out to actually view it. Not available.
  • Flipped to landscape mode hoping (as with other apps) this would expand my view and make it more visible/scrollable. Instead, the entire page is squeezed down to a tiny thumbnail.
  • Tried adjusting Text Settings size. That has no effect either.

Now have tested with a variety of media resources (going directly into the Hymnal Media resource, the various Logos map sets, Bible illustrations, etc) All share the same challenges.

It may depend on the size of screen your phone has. I have a DroidX which has a nice size screen. I did Ph 4:4 and could see that the thumbnails were hymm book pages. Touching one brought up the full page picture of the page "O Happy Day." The metadata would be nice to help know if it is a page you want to wait for. Since I use books more than pictures, I find the passage guide a nice feature. 3G is not as fast as wifi or 4G, but it puts my resources at my fingertips wherever I am (just so long as I have my phone and a charged battery). Clicked on Word Bible Commentary and within about 20 seconds I had it opened to Ph 4:4.

As they continue to develp it will only get nicer, but I do suspect that there will be limitations depending on the device. It's great, from my perspective, that Logos was willing to let us use the program while it is still in development. It helps us a lot more than it helps them. Any other company would have had a few professionals beta test and we wouldn't get to use it at all until it was fully developed.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We will be improving media support as we proceed towards a full release. A fix for this will be pushed out in a future beta.

    Thanks,

Note to Jim: yes, we all certainly appreciate access :) ... the above is not a complaint but a bug report. The difference is that I tried to give enough information so that Hunter in QA can reproduce the problem and give the developers solid information to fix/further develop the app.

Providing bug reports is one of the best things we beta testers can do to "pay" Logos in return for them having provided early access to the app! They need as many different bug reports as they can get.

    Been there ;)
