My # 1 wish for Logos app

Personally, I don't look to the iPad app to replace my laptop for serious study, but I use it primarily to read my books and take a few notes. I use Logos iPad to do any lengthy reading and as my Bible of choice when attending a Bible study or conference.

The # 1 thing I would like to see is the ability to read any and every book in my library - including PBB books in the near future. I realize this is largely a matter of copyright permission from publishers. I hope Logos will continue to work towards gaining the needed copyright permissions so that we can read our entire libraries. That would be the biggest improvement possible for me.

While it would be an improvement, would you be willing to pay for a mobile device license for those books that are currently unlicensed (and therefore unavailable) for mobile use? It seems unreasonable for us to expect Logos to incur additional expense without recompense.

For some of the resources I would. I would expect it to be a reasonable fee, and not the full price of the book in Logos, which I have already paid.
However, that is not what I asked for. I simply said this is my number one wish for the Logos App. It is where I wish Logos would focus more energy. They are not receiving direct compensation for anything they are doing for the app.
However, there is indirect benefit to Logos from the app due to the fact that I have purchased many resources only because they were available on the iPad app. Likewise, I have not bought resources only because they were not available on the app.
As I said, this is only my wish for the app, and I speak for no one else.

Bob has said numerous times that it is his desire for ALL of our personal resources to be available to us, on as many devices as possible. From Bob's explanation, I feel that Logos is working hard to make this happen, but in the end, it is the publisher/author who must come around. I am pretty sure that Bob's mom taught him how to say "please," and that he can do so when appropriate. [:)]

We really need to be careful for what we ask for. I wonder how many of you realize that if Logos did negotiate a special deal so that we could have say the NIV... and we had to pay an extra fee for that 1 resource... that we would need to pay a fee for all of the rest of our resources. You see, the deal that Logos has worked out now, with the all of the publishers of the books that we have now, they would want in on the extra revenue for the devices that we are using. I don't want to see any deal cut with any publisher unless it is a free deal. Please think about this, before you beg too hard!

Logos is working on bringing you all of your wants and desires just as fast as they can, but it takes time. Sure they could turn all of their gurus loose on the apple and droid products... but then who would be complaining about not having new resources being debuted? Please just give them time... barking wants and even Orders at times does not make anyone move any faster. Kindness overcomes many obstacles... Over the past several months I personally think that many on these forums might think about giving it a try instead of complaining that we don't have this or that! Just my observation....

I certainly am not "barking", making demands, or "Orders". I would never demand Logos do anything. I am not trying to speak for anyone else. I love the app.

However, I am simply expressing my # 1 wish. Making more of my library available on the app would be my number one wish for iPad.

If you feel otherwise, that's fine. I mean nothing critical in the comment.

I also think it is important that Logos know that what is available on the iPad directly impacts what I buy or do not buy.

Sorry Michael, I was not pointing my finger at you, or even trying to pick on you or anyone else in particular, rather at the seemingly unending thread that has been going on now for months... one person posts and it is like follow the leader. I believe that after the 100's of respondents to this tread over the many months that Logos has a very good idea that we would like more books, more functionality, Notes, markups... and whole host of other things. And they even know that we like to whine.... a lot! They are working on all of those things, and then some. I am just asking that everyone would cut them a little slack for a short while...

Michael, I have been a Logos customer for nearly 14 years now... I have beta tested each iteration of the software since I started using the product, and although as a beta tester, I have always had very specific concerns and even dislikes about what was coming down the pipe, Bob has always listened to us, even if he did not agree with us or even fix what we saw as an issue... but he listened! I know that they are listening, hearing, and working very hard to get us the product that we all want... but the place where we are at right now in the development of this software has to be very intricate, so, I suspect that we just need to give them some more time... making notes synchronize with all of the free platforms must be a nightmare and that is only one part of what we want! stay the course, keep hoping and praying for the moon, and pray for a fast delivery! LOL

Logos has always been very responsive to me, which is why I posted my "wish". They always seem to be interested in such things. I am certainly not trying to pressure the company, and couldn't if I wanted to. They are far too professional for that.

I do believe there are resources not yet available on IPhone for reasons other than copywright. I suspect the old Wesley's Works may be one of these. I think it is a matter of priority and time and very likely marketing strategy. So I intend to politely put my 2 cents worth into that. I do that because Logos has always welcomed this. I will continue to do so.

Over the years I have been able to share this wonderful tool with dozens of fellow ministers and church members. Logos is the most valuable tool I have ever had for Bible Study.

Michael, can you imagine where bible study would be without Logos? Having 30 or more books on my desk each week working on my sermon and bible classes... and all of the time? I am very thankful for Logos, and would not be able to do what I do as quickly as I do without them!

Amen, Kelly! It would be impossible for me to calculate the countless hours Logos has saved me over the years - just in Looking up words in a Greek or Hebrew lexicon. Not to mention the time in searching through books for relevant material. This is time that can be used wrestling with text rather than getting books off shelves and turning pages.
Even more valuable is the library Logos has made available to me. Through Logos I now have resources that I never thought I could afford. Even if I had these resources in paper, I could not use them half as effectively.
It is no exaggeration to say that Logos has changed my life.

As far as I know, there are two primary reasons that Logos does not "flip the switch" to allow a resource to be available on mobile devices: Copyright and technical. I believe that most fall into the first category. There are some resources which are unavailable for "technical" reasons. In another thread, Jana Gering (Project Manager at Logos Electronic Text Development Department) was very helpful to answer some of these questions. She was also able to "flip the switch" on some overlooked resources.

You mentioned in your previous post: "the old Wesley's Works." Is that a product that Logos sells? What is the name of it? I see that there are some in Pre-Pub, but I could not find the product you were referring to. May I suggest that you "politely put [in your] 2 cents worth" (as you have been doing) about the Wesley works? It might be more effective to post in the other thread I referenced, or to create a new one with a more informative title. Who knows? Maybe she could "flip the switch!"

This is also true for me as well Michael, even though most of the books that I have or use for study and sermon prep I also have in paper as well... but the big difference is that I can search them now like never before find the things I need in seconds, and copy and paste and get the information that I need so much more quickly and accurately.

The contract should be based upon the user and not the equipment. The user should have the right to use/view the digital content purchased at their discretion on what ever format they desire. PERIOD!

My laptop is mobile, who cares if it is an Ipad... which for all intentional purposes is just a "laptop". I have a license to view the content and as long as I am the only "one" using it for "myself" how does this usage violate the terms of agreement?

There were two collections that included Wesley's Works that are no longer sold. The same publisher also sold Clavin's Commentaries and Spurgeon's Sermons in Libronix format. I bought all three of these. Logos has published a new version of Calvin, and I bought that, too. However, I found very little difference in the old version and new. Both the old and new versions of Calvin and Spurgeon are available on iPad. The old Weslely's Works is NOT available on the iPad and the new version has not yet been published. So there is no version available on the IPhone /iPad at the present time. Of course, they are available on my laptop in L4.

There was also an old Libronix version of Barclay's commentaries which I own. It is not available on the iPad / iPhone either.

I would love to have those resources on my iPad.

I can empathize with your frustration, but that's life. Bob has stated his philosophy, which is that we should be able to take our resources with us, wherever we go. I believe that Logos is working hard to allow us to do so - it is in their best interest. Bob, however, can't override the copyright holders wishes.

In a similar realm of life, take a look at Hulu. It has been more than a year since I "cut the string" on paid tv services. I watch many of my favorite shows on Hulu, which doesn't cost me a dime! The funny thing is that, through Hulu, I am able to watch these shows on my laptop, but I am not able to [easily] watch them on my TV. This is because the copyright holders [NBC, ABC, FOX, etc.] do not allow Hulu permission to allow their shows to be viewed on Wii / Playstation / Roku type devices. Likewise, there is a Gray area about whether someone can legally rip a copy of a DVD they own to be played on a computer / portable device. The movie industry will tell you that you do NOT have that right. I, for one, would not want to cross them in a court of law. [Interesting side note: the UK just legalized the practice].

You said that you don't get the logic. I don't agree with the logic, but let me play Devil's advocate for a moment. If I write a book, I want you to buy as many copies of the book as possible. Just because you bought it last year in hardback, doesn't mean you can take a paperback copy... you have to pay for it again. Similarly, You can purchase it for your Mac, your PC, and your iPhone - each time bringing me revenue. I wrote the book. I own the rights to the book. I make the rules.

Like I said, I don't agree with this philosophy, but copyright has the force of law. Logos can't go beyond what their contracts allow them to do.

First, welcome to the Forums! I can't help you with the NIV (it's a copyright issue with Zondervan). However, I can help you with getting a reading plan other than the ESV. First, you will want to go to File | Reading Plan. It will then open up a dialog box that looks like a calendar. Above the calendar, there are blue text fields which you can click on to select different options. In this case I chose "New Living Translation" | "All Passages" | "Every Day" | "Starting Today" | and finishing in "One Year." Then click "Go."

Once you have created the Reading Plan, sync Logos 4. It is preferable to also restart the Logos 4 app, as this forces the app to check for new reading plans. I found the sync to work within about 10 minutes, but it may take longer.

I stumbled on it a little bit ago. I noticed a new total of resources in my library, and naturally did a search for Wesley. There he was!
