in m/s office 7 , how do you know you are saving to docxfile. ?

In Office 2007 - which I assume you are referring to:
For an individual file use "Save as Word Document"
To set this as a default, go into Word Options and the "Save" menu:

"Office 7" was I think Word 95, you will not beable to if this is the case, you should look at either updating or some of the free alternatives our there
