Maybe someone can answer this question for me.
Can one create a PBB in Libreoffice writer?
I do not have money for Word 2011 or other.
Yes (and with limitations text edit)
I think what I really need to know is...
can i create a 'index' of a book in Libreoffice.
I have not been able to do so as yet.

I don't know about what features Libreoffice has, but in Word you create your index by labelling the headings with "Heading 1", "Heading 2", etc. It is then automatically generated. You can label them using the silly ribbon or by using the "format paragraph" to set it.
You can label them using the silly ribbon

If you PB is not of a personal nature, you can upload the file here and I would be willing to take a look at what you have done.
actually, i have used a lost of articles, copies of material, sermons, etc. that I have.
I just can't get Libreoffice (or Logos) to create a index of the material I practice with.
Here it is in all its glory. I downloaded LibreOffice and experimented for you. It works just like we said... Use "Heading 1" for main points / chapters / sections, and work your way down. When you are done, save as .docx.

tried it over and over with a very simple outline.
can not get it to show index
it always shows the book but no index.
have watched video's and so-forth but can't get it to work
what is it that i'm not doing right?
oh well..
Again, I offer to take a look at the PBB if you wish. Just upload it in this thread.
Could it also be that you have the location bar hidden or collapsed? The three screen shots show different views. The first is showing the TOC. The second has the location bar collapsed. The last has it completely hidden.
As previously suggested, why don't you share one of your documents, but initially, just share your test attempt? I believe this will help us understand and resolve your issue.
would like to see more of that weird article in future... gotta luv that quote "I want to be weird in the God kind of way! "

It was from a Craig Groeschel sermon series called Weird. Transcripts of his sermons are available for free. You can find out more at http://open.lifechurch.tv/
I GOT IT!
discovered the secret in Libreoffice...well it was not secret but i found what i was not doing and it worked.
Now I have a TOC...
thanks for all the suggestions
I think I can hear the choirs singing [:)] Way to go Robert!
Sorry to resurrect this, but what was the secret, Robert? I'm stuck with the same symptoms! Please share??
Welcome [:D]
Personal Book Table of Contents is built from paragraphs, which have Heading # formatting style.
If personal book does not have copyright issues, could post docx file for other Logos users to examine.
Keep Smiling [:)]
Thanks--I have been using the Heading # styles in LibreOffice Writer, but as Robert above had encountered, and as I have encountered, it still wasn't picking up on the TOC. I have found a workaround for the moment by skipping Heading 1 and going to Heading 2, with Heading 3 appearing properly under that, etc. I don't know if there is a modification to the style that I made or need to make to get Heading 1 to work properly in LibreOffice at this point.
I can create a test document to avoid any copyright issues and will post if I can't get this up and running. I'm a bit curious to see how MS Office reads the Headings that LibreOffice is using.

I'm currently having the same problem with MS Word. I've been creating an index of the works in the Harvard Classics, but in some cases (not all) the headings aren't displaying in the TOC.
George--that is similar to what i experienced. At FIRST, Heading 1 was the only thing displaying in the TOC for me. I messed around with the Styles for a while, and then, Heading 2 would show up, but Heading 1 wouldn't. At that point, I found out Heading 3 was working (and all those underneath) so I left well enough alone, but it would be handy to find out what Style options specifically feed into L4's handling of these styles. There are options in LibreOffice in the "Organizer" and "Outline & Numbering" tabs which I feel might be relevant. Some kind of tagged XML doc with an explicit tagging layout would almost be easier than trying to control what the Office programs feel like doing at any given moment.
Since you are having problems with Libreoffice and I am having problems with MSWord, I suspect the problem is with the PB implementation.
Very likely. Though a DOCX file is just a Zip file containing XML documents and binaries mostly. You can unzip a DOCX file and see all the files that make it. If we knew, for instance, what tags in the Styles.xml file that is part of the DOCS that L4 uses when making its TOC references, I could edit the XML directly and make sure the tags were structured properly.
Don't know if I can explain what I have been doing and it may not make sense but this is approach that I discovered and have used to practice at PBB.
First, I build and save a file in 'Word 2002 xp'...course it only has 3 'Headings'. (can't afford new windows now)
Then I save the file. Then I open the file in LibreOffice and used the 'Headings' provided there. Then I save it in 'docx' format.
Then I build book in L4.
Maybe someone can explain to me why I have not been able to go straight to L'Office with a file and get it to build index when using 'Headings' there.
Little do I know about all this but, have enjoyed playing around.
I might add that building books is not foremost in my desire, rather, I would like to save my sermons in L4 so I could quickly find bits, pieces, things I've used in a sermon in past as I continue to study and expound the Word. Many times I revise an old message to speak to present needs.
Will we ever get something in way of a 'Sermon builder' in L4?
The way I used L4 for STUDY, NOTES, (want to save SERMONS)...I wonder if this will come in near future?
Now I read hints of future L5 and I don't have what I want in L4...way to save sermons...course could use PBB and may have too but...
Enough of my mouth...sorry.
